Fabergé Exhibition
The ‘Fabergé in London: Romance to Revolution’ exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London will feature a few of the remaining Fabergé tiaras along with a couple of Cartier ones that somehow snuck their way in. There are also several pieces of the ice/snowflake/winter jewelry made by Alma Pihl which are my favorite non-tiara Fabergé jewels. The exhibition will run from November 20th until May 8th. You can find out more about visiting here and as always let me know if you go.

Grand Duchess Alexandra of Mecklenburg-Schwerin’s Aquamarine Tiara, made by Albert Holmström circa 1904

And the mysterious Cartier tiaras...
Baroness Howard of Henderskelfe’s Wave Tiara, 1904
Lady Lilian Beit’s Diamond Tiara, 1909
My best guess is that these tiaras are currently owned by Wartski, who are partnering with the V&A for the exhibition, and they just used a couple of tiaras they had on hand to pad out the displays but it’s very misleading. If you go please investigate and report back.
I've been meaning to ask - how can a tiara also double as a necklace? Do they get mounted onto something?
Yes, they get mounted on a metal frame. There are different ways of attaching it but they usually use clips or screws. I’m going to link some videos because they do a much better job of showing you than I do trying to explain it with words.
The Fife Fringe Tiara uses tension which is pretty cool.
Princess Charlene’s Ocean Tiara looks like it snaps on and off the frame but they only show it for a few seconds at 2:40.
This one kind of slides on and off the frame.
This one happens really fast but it screws onto the frame.
This one forms brooches not a necklace and they screw onto the frame but the screws are built into the frame not separate little pieces.
I’m going to stop now because tumblr won’t let me put anymore videos in the post but as you can see there are lots of different ways to attach the tiara to the frame.
Have you posted about the 1910 Boucheron wave tiara before?? It’s so pretty! Are there any other tiaras with designs that are based on pieces of art/paintings??
I think the post on wave tiaras was the first time I’ve talked about it here on Tumblr. It is a stunning piece and I love how three dimensional it is, you can really feel the movement of the waves. It was made in 1910 by Boucheron and there’s no information about who it was made for so it was likely a stock piece. The only photos we have of it are from the time is was made and it hasn’t been seen since meaning it probably doesn’t exist anymore.
And here’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai which is the artwork the tiara is based on.
I can’t think of any other tiaras that were based on a particular piece of art but I feel like after I post this I will remember one.
