Vi rereads Elfquest, New Wavedancers Special #1

I'm only going to review the single issue introduction we got to these guys for now. The rest I want to do closer to when I read The Discovery, but for this one I wanted to use it to compare to the old Wavedancers.

The first ones we are introduced to are Brill, who becomes super important, and Spine, who ends up kinda fading into the background in later stories. Which is a shame, because I fell in love with this guy when he was introduced.

This introduction gives us a great look into Spine's personality, but the only thing we really get from Brill is that she is sad and wants kids. It doesn't even seem like she's sad about her lovemate Recognizing another so much as she's sad no one has Recognized her. Which might have been a fun plot point to unpack, but... that didn't happen.

On the one hand, I like that these two seem like great friends, and it's hard to find a male/female couple in fiction that are actually just friends. On the other hand, what if he had been serious?

Spine then starts naming all the men in the tribe, and Brill gives reasons why she's not down for it (too serious, too young, etc) which might have been used as a way to inform us, the reader, who the characters are, but... we don't really see that. We get no visuals as to who these guys are, and we get very little indication that her assessment is accurate to their personality rather than her preference.

I just wanted to point out that maybe she could have kept her net? Why would you drop that? You are never seeing it again.

Here we see Sandsparkle and Skimback, Brill's aformentioned lovemate, and the one he Recognized. We get a little of her personality, in that she doesn't like to be told what to do, but that's about it. And Krill? We know later that Brill and she are twins, but I don't think that is mentioned here.

I am curious what the boat is made of.

I chose thisbone to showcase the character designs. While they are nice to look at, many of the outfits don't seem practical for swimming. Even Spine, as much as I love him. Arm bands with long trails? Loincloth?What are they made of?

There's a lot of names and faces thrown at us, and the only ones that have any plot significance are the last two.

How did this even happen? The rope doesn't look like a net. That whale is incredibly close to the ship, too.

No lusting after magical mermaids in this world. Not even trying to capture them to show off at a freak show. Just hate.

I kinda like this. Older dead wood is harder to work with? Fun to see some limitations on powers.

I just want to show off, again, how much personality these characters have. Everyone is a *person* with motives, likes, and a past. In normal Elfquest, you get that with the Wolfriders and.... a handful of non-Wolfriders. It's nice to have another tribe that feels real.

Winnowill looks like she's surprised someone cares about her, genuinely, and without strings attached. Too bad it does nothing.

But it looked so fluffy!

So the Wavedancers must have come up with the ceremonies because they didn't have dramberries to help them remember.

This man needs a burger. He will snap in half if he turns too quick. How does his neck support his head? Tillaweed at least has the excuse of living most of her life in the water.

I do like the idea of another High One having survived. But this man needs to gain at least 10 lbs.

Looks like this takes place immediately after the special.

It's so funny reading this so soon after Wolfrider. Do you think Bearclaw would have wanted to leave the holt if Joyleaf had been killed by humans, or would it just have made him more vengeful?

I do like the butting of heads, and the "oh no, we have two chiefs now" dynamic. It's kinda fun.

Should have said hi to her when you had the chance, my guy. Or maybe you should have sent instead of popping out of the water yelling "hello" to whoever mught be nearby.

I wouldn't be so annoyed at this pairing if Jormak didn't look like every selfish power hungry character ever. Someday one of these characters needs to be a blonde.

Also, Winnie seems to be getting a collection of soul names.

I mean, the palace looked like that at one point, right?

Because being barren in the worst thing to ever happen.

So what was Sydor doing on that island?

I was going to comment earlier about the group being a trio. It's fun that they just have polyamory instead of simply alluding to it.

I'm sure nothing bad will come of this.

Oh boy, Sleia, you're going to be surprised.

I mean, he has a point.

Vi rereads Elfquest, Wavedancers #11

I legit forgot this got explained here and thought it was explained in Discovery. (Maybe it is explained in both? I can't remember.)

It is interesting that he searched "for days" and found her still floundering.

Puffer is adorable.

On the one hand, I like her story, and it would have been an interesting addition to Elfquest, where the portrayal of human and elf relations is... not great.

On the other hand, I feel like I had read at least 3 fanfictions just like this before this even came out.

Well, it's not like she knows what an elf is. And she's just been told that people who look like her and have powers like hers are spirits, so that's what she must be.

Interesting that she remembers a name she had that hasn't been used since infancy. I guess elf memories are slightly better than humans. Venka remembered the lodge collapsing after all.

I wonder if these humans really were the ones who killed her people, or if they came across the dead ones later, or if there was even some great misunderstanding. And I wonder, too, why the human took her in. I don't think that ever gets explained.

So, thebcrew was planning mutiny, but now that they've seen a "demon" on the ship, 2 or 3 of the guys are just deserting? I wonder how that plot point was originally planned to tie in.

And it was! Because the comic got canceled.

It is kind of a tender moment and could have been a fun relationship to explore, but alas.

I will be doing the lost pages, but it's a bit awkward, so I'll probably do it as replies instead of individual posts like I've been doing. We're getting to the last bits. Discovery is next, then Wild Hunt, and then... the Final Quest. (And then the Stargazer's Hunt and the Future Quest group.)
