Edit 11/19/2025: Since people keep reblogging this, the petition is already over, we won back on September 15th, I appreciate that everyone is so concerned about this, but there’s no need to worry about this particular issue anymore because the record labels are no longer threatening the Archive, we achieved victory in this particular issue months ago.

Just started saving craft and art and direct action and activism tutorials I want to be able to find again to The Wayback Machine* so that I know I'll always be able to find them again if they get moved or deleted

*The Internet Archive has a browser extension that lets you automatically archive a page with literally two clicks

And immediately. 10/10. 14/10. Would absolutely recommend

It also lets you see any archived versions of a page with just a few clicks, so it's great for getting around paywalls, as well as for keeping data and news stories from being deleted or moved

One very important note on the immense value of the Internet Archive that I haven't seen mentioned yet:

It crawls major newspapers like the New York Times multiple times per day.

For anything other than one of those scrolling updates breaking news pages, you can access it from the Archive usually within an hour or two of it being published. No paywall. You want international news? You got it. Opinion? That too. Recipes? It's all here. Page not yet archived? There's a button for that and now you got it.

There are various paywall-evading extensions and tricks out there, but they don't always work. This does.

Go forth and read the newspaper.

When AO3 goes down for maintenance, I always take it as an opportunity to read some of the fic I have saved from the Wayback Machine, fanfiction.net, etc.

But today, I was thinking that people might not know how to *find* quality fic on those sites, even if they want to.

So in that vein: would folks be interested if I wrote tutorials on how I go about finding (good) fic on the Wayback Machine/FFN/LJ/etc?
