Aqua had called them “heartless,” but to Jiang Cheng, they were just nuisances. Every time Zidian flashed, leagues of them vanished into thin air. Perhaps it was just his luck that he wielded a weapon that lit up every time it moved. After hoards of corpses, creatures, beasts, and other ferocious monstrosities, these “heartless” were a welcome break.

〝 How are you holding up? 〞 he asked over his shoulder to the keyblade wielder near by. He sounded almost like he was enjoying himself. He liked a good fight, after all.

his stomach growls as a reminder of his hunger -- the fact that he has not had a bite to eat in a while. the night before was spent camping underneath his dad’s bed to save his life, at the expense of his own future. today is spent wandering around, wondering what situation he had found himself in, wondering what he should do. ll he had to work with was that cryptic message on the device by him that provided little insight.

eyes close, trying to ignore the hunger raging. humans can live for two weeks without food -- what’s a day or two? he tries to convince himself that, but underneath the mature disposition is still a twelve year old child. he’s forced to grow up too early and forced to make decisions he shouldn’t have had to make. 

his distraction leads to a mistake. he walks into an older teenager, taller and stronger than him. the child falls on his butt, wincing as pain courses through him, aggregating his suffering. “s-sorry,” he says quietly, looking up at the person he walked into. he drills holes into the floor, not sure what else to say or do. his stomach, on the other hand, had an idea and growls loudly for attention.

Angeal’s wooden sword feels heavy in his hands. It was the lack of his own sword -- his family’s gift to him -- that made it feel that way. It colors his feelings even as he navigates this new world in search of a purpose.

The Lake of Koi seems peaceful at first, or at least a place where he may sit and think. As he kneels a fair distance away from the water’s edge he looks up to see he is not alone.

the first time they saw the shrine, they were amazed. 

is that supposed to be me? did they leave these presents for me?

they transform back from a cranidos to their true form and linger for a while, nibbling on the fruits and examining their likeness cut into the rock wall behind the altar. there are bits of gold flecked in the stone -- it catches the light streaming in through the temple and shines brilliantly. whoever was responsible for making this must’ve put a lot of care into it.

it was probably those humans living nearby. mew can’t help but admit it’s nice to be admired and respected whenever they make their appearances, even if they prefer to keep to themselves. sometimes, the humans beat drums and sing for them. they especially like that. this shrine must be another offering.

in his endeavor to preoccupy his mind, Titus found himself seated across from a stranger at a cafe that was hosting latte art competitions. he was neither a huge fan of coffee, nor had he ever made art on a cup of it, but a challenge was a challenge and he wouldn’t back down!

...it was much harder than it looked.

steady hands or no, he couldn’t get the design to turn into the flower he had set out to make. his hands were made to finesse locks, pick pockets, and draw maps, not combine two liquids to make art! 

he peeks over the table at the blue-haired stranger, trying to see if she was fairing any better. admitting defeat, Titus sets the cup down and sheepishly scratches the back of his neck.

“Damn. This ain’t no joke! I mean, if I were aimin’ for a big blob, it’s perfect, but this was supposed to be a flower. How ya holdin’ up over there?”

He reaches up, his fingers touching the petals of one of the cherry blossoms. He ponders it for only a few moments, his fingers tracing the edges with a certain determination, as if it holds some sort of secret he’s yet to uncover.

He pauses as he tilts his head, a wide smile on his face. He holds none of the pain of the war in his heart yet, he doesn’t know how it will hurt him and the fate he’s headed towards. His expression reflects this, and he plucks one of the flowers and hands it to the woman.

“This would look beautiful in your hair.”

The sharp jolt to his shoulder broke Jiang Cheng out of his thoughts. He’d been focused on trying to remember just how he’d come to Spirale. Everything he’d been able to find indicated he’d been here for a while, but he had no memory of this place, nor the people in it. If not for the sting from the impact, he was starting to wonder if this was some strange hallucination.

〝 Watch where you’re going!  〞 he instructed sharply, turning to look at whoever had bumped into him. There was, very briefly, a moment where he felt like he should recognize the girl, but it was gone before he could grab it. She looked, honestly, terrified; and just as out of place as himself. Quickly backpedaling his aggressive approach, he offered her a short bow and mumble of apology.
