Jolene froze.
She'd managed a little over a week's worth of respite after coming home where she'd managed not to run into him, but now it seemed that luck had run out, and the moment Waylon wrapped himself around her had that sick, terrified feeling that had been the cause of why she'd run away creeping back in all over again.
"What do you want?" she asked quietly, her tone clipped and unfriendly but tinged with fear and panic, Jolene refusing to turn and look at him.
His arms around her waist tightened slightly as he nuzzled at her neck, breathing in the scent of her and her fear. This was where she belonged and he hated that she had ever tried to leave like that.
"Mmmm, I missed you," he murmured, voice falsely sweet against her skin.
He was tempted to bite down, to mark her and reestablish his claim on her, but he knew that was too much too soon.
