Paul’s Spaceship Pictures:
So the first image is Arnold Bocklin’s painting Isle of the Dead (1883 version), which I believe inspired the design of the alien derelict in Alien. Bear with me.
The second image is Alien concept artist HR Giger’s homage to isle of the Dead. So he definitely knew the painting (it’s a famous painting so no surprise there).
The third image is a plan view of the derelict, by Giger. If you imagine Bocklin’s Isle seen from above, the asymmetric curve of the cliffs around the harbour, I think the shape is pretty similar.
And the Nostromo crew approach the derelict from the same direction the the ferryman approaches the Isle in Bocklin’s painting, clambering over rocks as the shrouded figure in the painting will have to climb the harbour steps.
Also, Ridley Scott knows the painting - the fifth image is a piece of production art by Wayne Haag from Alien Covenant.
