Joni Mitchell & guitarist Wayne Perkins, ca. 1973.
I’m sad to learn that “Almost Stone” Wayne Perkins (left in both photos above) has died.
Session vet Wayne Perkins experience playing guitar on Wailers records must have intrigued reggae fan Keith. Perkins lived with Keith, Anita, and Marlon for a while and reportedly was photographed with the band to see how he’d fit. Ultimately the gig went to Ronnie Wood.
Perkins was a superb player very much in the style of Lil’ Mick. Here is Wayne Perkins on Worried About You from Tattoo You. Close your eyes and imagine the band with another fifty years of an extraordinary guitarist to complement Keith’s riffing.
RIP Wayne Perkins † March 16, 2026
Cale.
Hand of Fate - The Rolling Stones
Some quietly influential musicians end up being like that thanks to the company they keep and which gives them the legitimacy that results in many people checking you. For instance, J.D. Souther might be one of those with a lot of famous friends, including The Eagles, who actually made a comeback by covering one of his songs and some of them also worked with him on his own LPs. Why shouldn't they, he's a solid songwriter and I'm sure the scene that surrounded him give him many benefits, including a variety of chances to hone his tunes. However, I get your questions – where's his quiet influence? Well, I would say he was not the main characters of his environment, he was a supporting one, yet the places would be less without them.
I was thinking about Wayne Perkins today and hoping he’s ok. He didn’t make the final cut but he did leave us this remarkable performance.
The Rolling Stones…I’m a fool to cry, certified fool…
