Mahathir Questions Validity of Anwar’s Royal Pardon Amid Legal Challenge
Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has cast doubt over the validity of Anwar Ibrahim’s royal pardon, despite approving it during his tenure. Speaking in Shah Alam, Mahathir said doubts surrounding the pardon should be decided in court, adding that if Anwar was found ineligible, he must step down as prime minister. His remarks come after former unity minister P Waythamoorthy filed a legal…

Najib: Waythamoorthy should have discussed with me before quitting
KUALA LUMPUR
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Friday confirmed that he had received the letter of resignation from Senator P. Waythamoorthy from the post of deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department on Feb 10.
However, the prime minister said Waythamoorthy did not meet and discuss with him before resigning.
“I respect and accept his decision, wish him success and also hope for the best in his future undertakings.
“Waythamoorthy might have a different approach to things, but he should have met me and discussed the matter with me before announcing his resignation,” he said in a statement here on Friday.
Najib said the decision of the Hindraf chairman to resign from his deputy minister’s post after the organisation had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Barisan Nasional (BN) to pursue the Indian community’s development agenda, was regrettable.
“To make the understanding a success, Waythamoorthy should have adapted himself to the government’s administration system and cooperate to obtain a consensus to implement government programmes.
“I wish to stress that in line with my approach of creating a people-friendly government and always helping those in need, we will carry out socio-economic development programmes for the Indian community, like what we have done for other communities,” Najib said.
In a a statement on Monday, Hindraf secretary P. Ramesh said Waythamoorty decided to resign from his post because he felt that the BN government had failed to keep its promises although it won the13th General Election last year.
Waythamoorthy was appointed as a senator and deputy minister after the elections.
Hindraf signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the BN government on April 18, on solving the socio-economic issues of the Indian community.

Waythamoorthy quits as minister

KUALA LUMPUR
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s department P. Waythamoorthy handed his resignation letter to the prime minister at 5.05pm on Monday.
The announcement of his resignation was posted on Waythamoorthy’s Facebook page by Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) secretary P. Ramesh.
“In his resignation letter, he had elucidated his reasons for relinquishing his duties from the current administration,” Ramesh wrote.
Earlier, Hindraf said Waythamoorthy decided to quit his government post as Barisan Nasional (BN) had failed to fulfil promises that were made to the Indian community after winning the 13th General Election.
Ramesh, in a statement posted on its website on Saturday, said Waythamoorthy would resign from all positions, including his senatorship.
Ramesh said Hindraf had done the unthinkable by signing a pact with its former nemesis, entirely in the interests of the Malaysian Indian poor and in the honest belief that the BN leadership would fulfil its promises.
“We have now given up any hope of that happening, (after) eight months of trying. Hence, the central committee of Hindraf has unanimously decided that Waythamoorthy tender his resignation from all government positions and the Senate on Monday, Feb 10, 2014.”
After the 13th General Election, Waythamoorthy was appointed a senator and deputy minister after Hindraf signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government.
Ramesh said eight months had passed since Waythamoorthy took up the position within the government, but Hindraf was met with nothing more than an unending series of delays and dead ends.
Previously, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein had suggested that Waythamoorthy should quit if he could not toe the line as a government official and continue to act as an activist.

Sorry, I'm not resigning, Paul Low tells Kit Siang

KUALA LUMPUR
Datuk Paul Low says he has no intention of resigning from his post, stating he had no reason to do so.
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of human rights and integrity also said he was productive in office.
He promised that changes were being made at present which would become more obvious to the public.
“I’m sorry to disappoint (DAP supremo) Lim Kit Siang, but I’m not stepping down. I know what I am doing,” he told The Rakyat Post
The Gelang Patah assemblyman had in his blog asked if Low would emulate Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P. Waythamoorthy, who had resigned from all government posts.
Waythamoorthy, who is in charge of Indian affairs, quit after claiming that Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s administration had “committed a historic act of betrayal to the Indian community”.
Lim added that it was clear that Najib’s administration did not have the “political will to fight grand corruption and gross abuses of power”.
Low, who said he did not wish to engage in a verbal battle with the septuagenarian, revealed that plans which he had drawn up, were being implemented.
That showed political will, the former Transparency International Malaysia president said.
Low, however, said nothing he did would be good enough for his critics, adding that Lim should be realistic and realise that no government was perfect.
“If he expects everyone to be perfect, then everyone should resign.”

Follow in Waythamoorthy's footsteps, Kit Siang tells Paul Low
Datuk Paul Low has been urged to resign from his post.[/caption]
KUALA LUMPUR
DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P. Waythamoorthy was set to resign on Monday as he (Waythamoorthy) believed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s administration had “committed a historic act of betrayal to the Indian community”.
Waythamoorthy, who is Persatuan Hindraf Malaysia (Hindraf) chairman, had cited that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government had not honoured the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two parties to resolve the chronic socio-economic problems afflicting the Indian community.
“The question now is whether Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Paul Low will follow in the footsteps of Waythamoorthy and resign from his posts as it is crystal clear that Najib’s administration does not have the political will to fight grand corruption and gross abuses of power,” posted Lim in his official blog.
He said Waythamoorthy and Hindraf were the only ones in the country who did not know that Najib had no political will or courage to deliver on the promises in the MoU.
Lim said Paul Low had said he would ensure that at least five of the country’s institutions would be free from corrupt practices and abuse of power and that he would risk everything to keep them clean.
He also urged Malaysians to rally behind him in the fight to keep the judiciary, the Attorney-General’s Chambers, National Audit Department, the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) free from political control.
“Paul Low is leading the people up the garden’s path as he is fighting a losing battle daily.”
He also charged that of the five institutions mentioned by Paul Low, only one, the National Audit Department, had remained unscathed by corrupt practices and abuses of power, yearly producing voluminous reports of cases of extravagance, waste of public funds and abuses of power by various government ministries and agencies.
“I do not know what Paul Low has to be proud of in Malaysia’s corruption ranking in the annual Transparency International Corruption Perception Index,” said the veteran DAP leader.
The excerpt from Kit Siang’s blog follows his speech made during the Pakatan Rakyat’s Open House in Kota Kinabalu on Sunday.

MIC: Waythamoorty's quitting won't affect Indian representation
MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam says the party will continue to work with the government to solve issues affecting the Indian community.[/caption]
KUALA LUMPUR
The resignation of Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) chairman P. Waythamoorthy will not affect the Indian community’s representation in the government, said MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam
News portal The Malaysian Insider quoted Dr Subramaniam as saying that MIC had and would always be highlighting concerns and welfare of the Indian community. Its efforts would not hindered or jeopardised just because of Waythamoorthy’s resignation.
“I don’t think they (Hindraf) could have raised any issues which have not been raised before, because we have virtually raised all those possible issues. It’s a matter of implementation to our (MIC) satisfaction.
“Our expectations and demands are high, so we will continue with our agenda,” said Dr Subramaniam on the Hindraf leader’s decision to quit from all government posts held by him.
Hindraf adviser N. Ganesan said the group’s Central Committee unanimously decided that Waythamoorthy, who was appointed as Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, should tender his resignation on Monday.
The group claimed Putrajaya had been dragging its feet in fulfilling Barisan Nasional’s (BN) election promises to the Indian community.
Hindraf had reached an understanding with BN just before the general election last year. Waytha signed a memorandum of understanding with the coalition, declaring support for BN after the latter promised to resolve socio-economic problems faced by the Indians if it was returned to power.

Waythamoorthy to quit all govt posts, Hindraf blames BN
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and Hindraf chairman P. Waythamoorthy is to resign from the government as he claims the BN government has failed to fulfil its promises to improve the Indian community.[/caption]
KUALA LUMPUR
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and Hindraf chairman P. Waythamoorthy will relinquish all of his government positions on Monday.
Hindraf secretary P. Ramesh, in a statement posted on its website on Saturday, said Waythamoorthy will resign from all positions, including his senatorship, alleging the Barisan Nasional (BN) government had failed to fulfil any of its promises since winning the 13th general election last year.
He said Hindraf’s sole regret was not being able to deliver the changes to the Malaysian Indian poor as promised.
“We sincerely apologise to them for the hopes we had raised. Hindraf now opens another chapter in our struggle after this.
“It continues till we achieve our ultimate objective of bringing changes into the lives of the Indian poor. There is not the slightest doubts about this,” said Ramesh.
He said Hindraf owed loyalty only to the Malaysian Indian poor.
After the 13th general election, Waythamoorthy was appointed a senator and deputy minister after Hindraf signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government.
Ramesh said eight months had passed since Waythamoorthy took up the positions within the government, but Hindraf was met with nothing more than an unending series of delays and dead ends.
“It now clear to us that the Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional are not going to honour the MoU. They have neither the necessary political will nor the courage to deliver on the promises in the MoU.
“The signing of the MoU and the often repeated promise of ’Nambikei’ by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak seems now to be utterly empty promises to the Indian community.
“Their foot-dragging is not due to the usual and unavoidable grind of bureaucracy, but is just a guise for their concealed intention not to honour the MoU.
“Najib and BN, in not honouring the memorandum, have committed a historic act of betrayal to the Malaysian Indian community,” said Ramesh.
Previously, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein had suggested that Waythamoorthy quit if he could not tow the line as a government official and continued to act as an activist.
News portal fz.com reported that when asked to confirm the statement, Waythamoothy replied via SMS: “Yes, it is true.”
