I . Moa Zhao is a truly mysterious woman and aware of her own vagueness; there are times in which she trusts that Lupin is capable of reading between the lines, of grasping the complexity of an old mind underneath sullen features – and on other days, she barely believes him knowledgeable enough to understand her bitter remarks. It’s a tough task, to crack through the armour of a deathless warrior but he does it eventually. The first time she laughs at his jokes is by the side of a campfire. The hunt has dire leads, the target is a personal one for him. A forest green-coloured Ram Bighorn stands at the side of a lifeless road, equipped with sleeping bags on the back, several quilts, and two large holdalls stuffed to the brim with weaponry. It’s an American cowboy’s kind of adventure, frame curled up in a cotton-lined windbreaker as fingertips stir the simmering stew. “ Thank you, ” she mumbles that evening under her breath, gaze flickering upward to meet his gaze. “ I needed a break like this. ”
II . He gets on her bad side far too often and yet manages he not quite to push her past her very own boundaries. There’s threats, growling, beast against animal; when he pries too much and asks the wrong questions, she loses her temper and shoves him harshly into the nearest tree. He doesn’t forgive it and she doesn’t forget. But knows he afterwards that she doesn’t like him enough yet to spare him if he were to overstep his authority. And she, in response, receives more than enough bruises to understand that Lupin Delmont is someone who better not underestimated when the time comes to pick a side.
III . There is a time where she almost kisses him but doesn’t; the hunt is over, her clothes are stained red and a chest heaving when she gets back onto her feet. It’s a dangerous situation – there’s naught quite comparable to the brutality of a beast that has successfully killed. Her blood burns, eyes glint, and when he offers a grotesque compliment, is she almost tempted to close the distance. Sex and death always mix together, violence and blood become enticing to a soulless monster. But she grits her teeth, nods, and vanishes into the night without any response making it past the tip of her tongue. It would have been a mistake, she’s sure. But then again, is she prone to always making the same mistakes over and over again.
