A popular alternative street food in Eastern India and Bangladesh is Peyara Makha (a sort of spicy guava salad). Guava (Psidium guajava) is a tropical fruit with a wide range of health benefits. The fruit is replete with antioxidants and other nutrients like vitamin C and lycopene. It is a powerhouse of fiber. Guava may help manage diabetes, protect the heart, and boost digestive health. Preliminary research suggests that compounds in guava leaf extract may have a positive effect on a range of illnesses and symptoms, including menstrual cramps, diarrhea, the flu, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Guavas are harvested throughout the year (except during May and June) in one or the other region of the country. However, peak harvesting periods in north India are August for rainy season crop, November- December for winter season crop and March-April for spring season crop.
