WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY : Did you know?

The date for World Down Syndrome Day being the 21st day of the 3rd month (i.e. today), was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome, and was proposed by a Greek medical geneticist, S.E. Antonarakis.

I've been very fortunate to have a Mother in the special-needs field. I grew up alongside children with Down syndrome and got to witness first-hand the healthy, happy, and full lives they can lead. This video is magnificent in the fact that it showcases that Down Syndrome isn't an end-all-be-all life sentence. These unique children are a ray of light and can be such a positive force in an individuals life. We must do more to highlight these individuals and erase the stigma in our culture that people with Down Syndrome are damaged, and aren't capable to lead the same types of lives that we do.
