Heads up because I’m about to rant about retail and consumer fuckery so ignore if not interested

I was on a five hour shift tonight at the cinema. After my promotion, I mostly work in the administration office, but today it was a concessions shift - usually shitty, because you’re working with the public, but damn it was only five hours, so surely it would be fine???

It was literally the worst shift of any job I’ve ever had in my life. Worse than any “Christmas” related shift. And yes, it was partly because it was so busy (whY THE FUCK IS JUMANJI SELLING OUT EVERY FUCKING SCREEN???) but also because people are so??? fucking rude???

We are understaffed because the company is trying to cut back on hours, so that’s one thing. There were three of us (down to two) on an 8 register department selling tickets because they hadn’t scheduled anyone else on. One of us was someone who had literally been hired two weeks previously - who had told me she’d only been on this department once before, and would probably need help at some point - so I told her to be honest with customers, that she was new and might be a little slower or unsure of how to help them. Usually (in my experience) that meant that customers are kinder. They’re willing to wait a little longer. 

biTCH WITHIN FIFTEEN MINUTES THIS POOR, POOR GIRL (who was literally no older than 17) WAS IN ACTUAL TEARS BECAUSE A GROWN ASS MAN (in front of his two tiny children) HAD CUSSED HER OUT SO BADLY THAT I LITERALLY HAD TO LEAVE MY CUSTOMERS MID TRANSACTION AND PHYSICALLY STEP BETWEEN THEM TO CALM THE SITUATION.

God, that poor girl. He was shouting, swearing, had cut the queue (because she’d made a simple mistake the first time she’d served him that could be easily rectified) so the customers she had been serving were also pissed off (which added to her panic and stress), and I just??????????

NOTHING IS THAT IMPORTANT THAT YOU MAKE A KID EARNING MINIMUM WAGE (WHO VERY NICELY TOLD YOU THAT SHE WAS NEW AND MIGHT NEED A LITTLE PATIENCE) TEAR UP TO THE POINT I HAD TO FUCKING SEND HER OFF THAT DEPARTMENT SO SHE COULD RECOLLECT. I HAD TO PULL HER ASIDE AND TELL HER THAT SHE HAD DONE THE BEST SHE COULD - THAT HER SERVICE HAD BEEN PERFECT AND THAT SHE SHOULDN’T BE ASHAMED, BECAUSE IT WAS HIS PROBLEM.

SHE DIDN’T COME BACK. I ASSUME A SUPERVISOR FOUND HER SOBBING SOMEWHERE AND EITHER SENT HER HOME OR PUT HER ON ANOTHER DEPARTMENT. 

I HOPE IT WAS FUCKING WORTH IT, YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE PIECE OF SHIT CUSTOMER. I HOPE IT WAS FUCKING WORTH MAKING HER CRY SO YOU COULD MOVE TWO SEATS TO THE FUCKING RIGHT.
