With not interacting with JK Rowling works I think we should all go read Charlie bones instead. By far the better magic school series.
did u guys know aziraphale and crowley kissed on screen. thats wiid
John Price who wasn't prepared for Johnny to die. He wasn't ready to see that young man off, he had great potential, and it was snipped short by fate. He had to move past it, men die, people give up, it's something he's dealt with for years.
He can't let this one make a difference in how he functions, filing the paperwork for him to be sent to rest. He continued on like always, missions going by without much of a thought. Nearing when he should probably retire, when things ached more than they used to. When Johnny's face still hasn't left his dreams.
Blank eyes, life snuffed out like a flame. Blood slowly cooling against his head, a face that hasn't left his mind since. No matter how much he tells himself he has to get over it, the team isn't the same, nothing is. He wasn't new to death, he's seen more than his fair share, it hurts when a man goes home early, far earlier than they should. But it's a risk they take with the military.
So why does this change everything, a man he treated like a son, but he did the same with Simon and Kyle too. The only difference was that they were still breathing. Missions went by, everything more of a chore than a duty he held himself to. Everything changed, even more so for the worst. Another mission, and he lost Simon.
It was a moment he should have been prepared for, should have stopped it before it happened. He had a hand to the back of his neck, leading him past enemy fire to safety, only stopping when the warmth of blood seeped into the fabric of his gear. A man he's worked with for far longer than Johnny or Kyle, and he lost him too. Having to see the way Kyle stared, hands shaking. Still having to lay down cover-fire as Price lugged Simon's limp body into his arms to lay him on the ground behind cover.
Gunshot through the neck, blood coating his hands, he couldn't stop it. Simon was already gone, two of his men, lost to the fires of war. Having to deal with the paperwork, for another of his sons, losing their life, with him not being able to fix it. He had Kyle still, that would have to do for now. Now at night, he saw Johnny's face, Simon's right next to him, at least they were together, the one good thing he could find about this situation.
He didn't know what to do when he lost Kyle next. They were asked for another mission, put with a whole other group of men to accomplish it, because him and Kyle were all that was left of an elite force people still needed. This time, Price could have stopped it, it was his fault. He made the wrong call, he didn't know the other soldiers that they were working with, he should have considered their actions when he sent Kyle to help.
He heard the explosion before he saw it, their own mine, the other team hadn't consulted this, he couldn't have known. It didn't lessen the pain he felt, he couldn't stand to see it, Kyle wasn't whole. Went with more pain than his other boys. Now he was alone, and when the mission ended, he put in his papers. He wouldn't fight without them. Couldn't do it.
He would have preferred to die in the field, but he couldn't bring himself to work with another group of people. So he dealt with it, the ache that reminded him of how he lost the men closest to him, how he did nothing to prevent it. How he outlived all of them, something they'd joked about, but he couldn't handle thinking about it. Maybe this is what he deserved, all the suffering he's caused in his time fighting, it all came back tenfold.
So when he settled down in a home, he did it for them. Kept going, because they'd be pissed if he killed himself, if he did anything else than live for them. Live the time they should have had, maybe his life was this long because they sacrificed themselves. Working alongside him, they knew it was a possibility, and he knew they'd do anything for them. He'd just always hoped it wouldn't come down to their lives. The universe has its own plans no matter what he prays for.
He knew what was coming before it even got bad enough to get it diagnosed. He was forgetting more, living alone didn't help him in that regard. Slowly, his dreams morphed, his men's faces becoming less than human. At least now he wouldn't have to see them dead, wouldn't have to remember how they looked because he'd failed them.
Maybe it was better that he forget them and die alone, than remember and regret for the rest of his time spent on this godforsaken Earth.
Maybe they'd forgive him.
Boston scored!!!!!
an ear and a bit of exposed neck? this is as flavorful as a spicy ankle pic 😉
i love how -seriously- veilguard took the mandate to wrap up the cliffhanger left at the end of trespasser. they really were like YES there will be elven gods and YES they will be on the screen and YES we are going to let you kill them and YES we are going to give closure to the solavellans and YES we are going to let you wreck half of minrathous!
**particularly** the closure to solavellan part - it just isn't something that would have happened ten years ago. **certainly not** making the default inqy a female elf. i teared up when i saw that last part ngl
PS I recognise your ao3 name!! you have got some amaaaaaaazzzzzing work on there, holy hell
akfjslkf oh my god /u\ somehow very surprised to be recognized that way...! thank you though, so flattering, and i'm so glad you've enjoyed some of what i've written 🥺
and you are ABSOLUTELY right about all of this! veilguard really said: yeah we know WE KNOW and it feels! idk, excited? it doesn't feel like pandering or like they're giving us what we want, to me, veilguard feels like it was created with a lot of love and a lot of excitement (of course there were stressors too). but it feels like they wanted to tell us this story
and i wanted to hear this story! i have for so many years, and as much as i was looking forward to it, eager to see where they went, the reality of it blew me away. it is so much more than i ever would have expected. the lore is profoundly satisfying, yet not so closed off that i'm like oh cool we know it all. no, the cogs are still turning in my brain and i love that feeling
having elgar'nan and ghilan'nain be the big bads was SOOO cool and so satisfying fr. and they're interesting! could've been flat, but they aren't... yet it was still emotionally satisfying to fight them, it wasn't like "oh shit, i kinda feel like maybe we shouldn't have to fight..." no, no, it still felt like we needed to fight, 100%
the solavellan stuff....! SO healing! the most!!! 😭 so many years of solavellan hell and we now get solavellan heaven....! and it is such a beautiful ending, genuinely incredibly moving. and you're right, it's amazing that a female elf is the default inquisitor. it's so nice to not see a male default character or a human default character. small thing, but very nice and very important
thank you for this, all of it 🥺😭💖 i got so many more of these messages than i ever expected so i'm still working through them, but they are each so lovely and i treasure them and the kindness in sending them to me
i hope you have an absolutely lovely day/night/time 💖
