1) This episode is starting way too merry and jolly to end up well, isn’t it?
2) I wish there was a shot of Wynonna saying “well, that’s not canon” because wouldn’t that be an A+ meme? Especially because what’s canon in this scene is the Menstru-Angel!
3) One of the boys is chasing after Santa, and are we gonna get a Santa demon? Because I’m here for it! Oh fuck, it’s just fucking Bulshar.
I’m still... not scared of Bulshar? Like, we keep being told how he’s the Big Bad but for the most part, he hasn’t done anything truly horrifying yet. And he doesn’t look menacing either. He’s this old chap with a questionable fashion style, is all.
4) Wynonna feels weird about their mom being back home and living with them as if she’d never left, while Waverly is excited at the prospect of spending some mother-daughter time with her. I’m with Wynonna on this one. It still feels weird.
5) Um… so, Wynonna finally tells Waverly that her dad was an actual angel, and Waverly is properly freaked out, and has to force her origin story out of her mom. But… Mama Earp just tells her a story a la The Notebook without zeroing in on the fact that this Julian guy was a freaking angel. Why is she not explaining that tidbit of information?
6) OMG I died…
7) This is the sweetest bromance ever? I loved everything about this scene! Doc telling Jeremy he should get on with some gentleman, Jeremy being offended at the suggestion he can’t pass the Bechdel test, Doc being totally clueless about all the cultural references, and the hug at the end? Ugh, they’re the cutest!
8) What type of Santa Workshop of Hell is this?
It seems like at least a dozen people or so have been kidnapped and everyone is chilling and celebrating Christmas? Priorities, I guess?
9) Oh, okay, people are freaking out. And Nedley is in shock. And Wynonna is making googly eyes at this Charlie guy in the crime scene of a missing kid. At least he saved her, which earns him a couple of points.
10) Do you think Purgatory’s first families made some type of pact with Bulshar to give up their descendants or something? I mean, there must be a reason why people belonging to these families are going missing.
11) And Waverly is paying a visit to Bobo. I’m very excited about this, I’ve always enjoyed their interactions so much.
12) OMFG, Doc had no idea that his wife had always been a vampire?? This show is the best sitcom EVER.
13) So… is Waverly really an angel? Or is Bobo calling her an angel because of his belief that a woman called Waverly saved him all that time ago and told him to protect her when they met again?
14) Ay ay ay, these two break my heart every single time!
DOC: It is bad luck to refuse a kiss underneath the mistletoe.
WYNONNA: Are you waiting for one or are you offering?
DOC: The offer is always there.
WYNONNA: Maybe you should stick to kissing your wife.
DOC: I have not been with her in a century.
WYNONNA: Oh, so your knife was at her place because your dishwasher was broken? It is not my jam to be the other woman.
DOC: Dammit, Wynonna, you are not the other woman. You're... another woman.
WYNONNA: What does that mean?
DOC: It means, she was my wife. And now you're... someone I've shared something even greater with. More than just romance. We had a baby...
DOC: Isn't it time that we stopped being scared and starting being honest with one another?
WYNONNA: Honestly? I don't know what to do with you.
DOC: You could admit that you love me.
WYNONNA: Let's just get back to work.
Yes, yes, YES, I’m a sucker for this type of relationships. He’s always wearing his heart on his sleeve and laying it all out for her, and she’s so afraid of giving herself to someone that she can’t admit she does love him. I just hope nothing happens to Doc before she gets the chance to be honest with him…
15) Nedley is having a hard time coming to terms with his responsibility in this kid’s disappearance (although it’s obvious he couldn’t have done anything to stop it.) He’s questioning his role as a sheriff, and I know this is all leading up to Nicole taking over. He’s mentioned several times he’s tired, and the idea of passing the torch to Nicole has been festering for a while. I guess if this kid dies, that will be the last drop for Nedley.
16) What is Bulshar doing with these people?
17) So, Bulshar is offing the first families’ descendants because their ancestors betrayed him and turned him in to Ward. And… how mean is it if I’d rather little Tim died instead of Jeremy’s boy toy? Oops.
18) Okay, Charlie dude wasn’t as clueless as he seemed to be, which is always appreciated. But Doc should’ve been the one by Wynonna’s side when they broke into Bulshar’s Little Workshop, kicking ass and calling names.
19) Awww, that was sweet!
And little Tim didn’t have to die, go figure.
20) This is not a surprise, of course.
21) No no no, Doc left in the middle of Christmas dinner and Wynonna was about to go after him but her mom told her to stay, will these two ever be on the same page? Ever?!
22) That was a nice gesture…
But I’m still not on board with the Mama Earp train.
23) There it is.
That’s the meat of the matter, and it’s nice to know Wynonna at least can admit it to herself, and to her mom. She thinks she’s broken and she thinks she doesn’t deserve good things, love, happiness, whatever version of a happy ending one could get at Purgatory. I just hope when she makes up her mind, the writers don’t find some contrived plot to keep her and Doc apart.
24) Ugh.
I guess Wynonna can get in the middle of her own happiness all by herself. I’ve got nothing against Charlie, I’ve liked what I’ve seen of him so far. But I can’t see him as anything but a distraction since that’s exactly what Wynonna is going for.
25) Oh, damn, Mama Earp, you’ve no idea what you’ve done.
26) Waverly is every lesbian’s wet dream, isn’t she?
27) Um… Nope?
Nonononono
Fuck this. Why couldn’t Wynonna be honest with him? He heard the words he needed to hear from her, but it was Kate saying them. And it was so obvious she was playing him like a fiddle. He knew it, too, and I guess it was an easy choice. But what will this mean for him? What will be the rammifications of this choice? Doc Holliday, a vampire? I don’t know if l like the sound of that. I guess I’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.
28) A fun episode that advanced a lot of the season’s arc a bit, and I can’t wait where this season takes us! I still need answers about Waverly!
29) Hope you enjoyed my recap, and, as usual, if you’ve got this far, thank you for reading! If you enjoy my recaps and my blog, please consider supporting it on ko-fi. Thanks!
Is the tree possessed by Dolls or something? Why is a tree helping Wynonna and Doc?
And why is Peacemaker not working?
2)
3) Okay, the trees are fucking bleeding and this dude just called it “a murder tree” and what the actual fuck!
4) So… the “fire” never really happened, it was just a Black Badge cover-up for the massacre. I really want to see where they go with this whole backstory they’ve given Nicole because so far? Not into it.
Nicole does make a good point of asking Waverly why she hasn’t talked to her mom yet to figure out who her parents are. She seemed quite intent on figuring it out last season, and here she has the perfect opportunity to have every answer she’s looking for, and she’s not taking it? Waverly is anything but a chicken, so I’d figured she would confront her mother head on but I guess she’s been conveniently written OOC so that the writers can keep this mystery going for a while. I hope they don’t stretch this for too long, though.
5) Why did Nicole randomly and carelessly throw the ring in the middle of the forest? Huh? That’s also kind of OOC? Wasn’t she talking about disposing of it carefully two minutes ago?
6) MORE OF THIS, PLEASE.
7) And more of this.
8) Okay, so Waverly IS going to see her mother, she just didn’t disclose that bit of information to Nicole, why? She just made this big speech about not keeping secrets from each other… or is it that she wasn’t planning on seeing her mom until Wynonna brought it up and basically set it all up for her?
And suuuure, Mama is doin’ just fine!
9) So, Wynonna couldn’t shoot Peacemaker because she ran out of bullets, which is a more logical explanation than what I was expecting. I don’t know why but I just assumed Peacemaker had magical ammo and it didn’t require reloading? Anywho, look at these two idiots flirting with each other and basically dry-humping…
10) SHIT. That was a low blow.
But how fucking adorable is it that he’d taken the time to buy - or build! - baby Alice a crib? My heart!
11) Why was their mother so intent on Waverly never finding out where she was or seeing her? And what’s going to happen when Waverly does…? There must be a reason. It seems she was trying to protect them.
12) Why are they giving me so much Doc/Wynonna in this episode? What’s going to happen? (Listen, I’ve grown up watching Joss Whedon shows, I’m conditioned to believe that happiness is followed by utter and complete destruction and mysery!)
13)
NICOLE: Can we talk? It’s about Nedley.
WYNONNA: Not again. How many more plungers do we need?
14) Wait, did I forget that Jeremy was gay or they haven’t mentioned it before? Because I’m all for it, and especially about the way it was casually brought up in conversation because it’s not Jeremy’s single defining characteristic.
15) I guess the mother-daughter reunion is happening sooner than expected, since Waverly was contacted as her last known emergency contact.
16) Jeremy is totally vibing with this Robin dude who found the murder tree and they’re making silly tree puns and it’s gay heaven, I love it.
17) Well, that couldn’t have gone any worse…
And yet, I can’t help but feel she means something else? I still feel she’s trying to protect Waverly.
Something happened when Waverly touched her, too, and then she kept saying “she’s unbound, she’s loose, kill the demon.” Waverly of course assumes her mom is referring to her as “the demon”, but I have a feeling she’s talking about an actual demon.
18) I really felt for Nedley when he admitted he’s tired of covering the supernatural shit up. Man, I hated him on the first episode of the show and now I’ve really grown to like him? And Wynonna suggested he should step aside and let Nicole take charge, and he’s actually considering it, and I’m here for Sheriff Haught.
19) Listen, I’m not usually into Gay, meet Gay, now get together because you’re the only two Gays so therefore you must be attracted to each other and date, but… I’m really liking the Jeremy/Robin interactions so far? They’re really cute!
20) And now they’re two gays who have zero idea about the woods lost in the forest and they found the stairway to heaven…
21) Mama Gibson is not messing around.
22) Ah, great, the idiots who let a dangerous convict escape have now locked Wynonna up. Marvelous.
23) Damn, Waverly keeps thinking her mother wants to kill her and that she called her a demon, but I just fucking know she’s talking about a literal demon that’s probably threatening Waverly’s life, that’s why she’s kept away from her.
24) Wait, what?
NEDLEY: Michelle didn’t go to prison because she burned down the barn. She went because her youngest daughter was in it.
Her youngest is Waverly? So did she try to set Waverly on fire? I have a hunch she’s possessed.
25) Oh, dang, Doc is hearing a baby’s cry in the woods. Of course, this is a trigger for him, he’s thinking of Alice, and he’s being lured into the woods.
26) Major Spike vibes in this scene…
27) Hm. Bulshar just tried to strike up a deal with Doc – he’ll give Doc reprieve from the knowledge of his miserable destiny if Doc does his bidding. And Doc was really contemplating accepting. Don’t be weak, Doc. Come on. There has to be a way.
28) So, this fucking corrupt guard suggests they should just off Wynonna and write it off as if Michelle murdered her own daughter when she was trying to escape. And of course, he’s a fucking revenant. It’s definitely going to be interesting to see how Wynonna gets out of this one while handcuffed and without Peacemaker…
I mean, she was fucking tasered and yet…
QUEEN.
29) Nedley, my heart. He’s so heartbroken over this.
NEDLEY: Well, I got a call to a situation at the Earp farm. By the time I got there, the barn was lit up like a torch. You... somehow you escaped. I mean, you were covered with soot, you were crying, but you were unharmed.
WAVERLY: And my mother?
NEDLEY: She was... locked in your daddy's patrol car. She set the fire. But she was no murderous sociopath. She was Michelle Gibson. Rodeo spitfire. The wild heart and loyal soul of Purgatory. Even the thugs and the dimwits drank to her. With her. They loved her. Look, she wasn't herself that night. She kept... she kept insisting that... that she was trying to vanquish a demon.
WAVERLY: A demon she thought was... me.
NEDLEY: Well, that would explain The occult nonsense that Ward saw plastered all over the barn before she lit the match. Did you believe it? That was Ward's interpretation. Look, your pop was my boss, so... And I know... I know I should've been braver. I should've defended her. But... I booked Michelle like I was told to. God, this just keeps getting worse. I've been trying to make up for it ever since. I kept watch over you. I tried to set Wynonna on the straight and narrow. That didn't work out. And when I became Sheriff, I pulled the report. I didn't want anyone seeing it.
30) Why would Wynonna let the revenant in on the fact that she got a kid? I mean, wasn’t the whole point of sending Alice away to protect her from the likes of him? I get that she used that bit of information to distract him, and yeah, she did this later…
…but maybe don’t go talking about your child out loud around the enemies?
31) Why is he coughing dirt? Is he going to get gay-buried before he can be allowed to actually gay?
32) Now Waverly is listening to her mom’s tapes with a psychiatrist or therapist or something, and yep, I’m still convinced she was possessed or something and the reason she was trying to stay away from Waverly is because she wanted to protect her. As she was talking to the therapist, she said “Shut up!” or something like that and she was clearly talking to someone else who was not there, like someone who might be in her own head or that only she can see. Someone or something that might be using her to kill her own daughter. The question is, who and why? Is it Bulshar manipulating her the same way he tried to manipulate Doc? Or is it something else altogether? And why is this something or someone so intent on killing Waves? What is she? What kind of role is she supposed to play in the grand scheme of things for this evil entity to want her dead so badly?
33) Okay, theory confirmed, Doc just heard a third, infernal voice on the tape.
34) Oh shit, is history going to repeat itself?!
Yep, there was an actual demon in serious need of a facial and makeover.
35) Bye bye Robin, I guess?
36) Who the fuck is Jolene and why is everyone acting like Stepford Wives? Is this some sort of Ted/Dawn scenario?! And why is it that, in a supernatural show, this is by far the creepiest thing I’ve seen?!
37) So, I’ve got a lot of questions. First of all, I want to know more about the murder trees. How do they come to be? Are they inhabited by serial killers? We saw the face in one of them, and they can actually walk and move around, but why do they bleed? Is it like their victim’s blood? Also, who the fuck is Jolene? I mean, I know she’s probably the demon that showed up in the barn, but what’s her deal? What does she want? I mean, she didn’t kill Waverly, and instead she’s feeding and glamouring the whole group… to do what? Where was Robin taken? Can we please not do the whole bury-your-gays trope? I expect better of this show. Will Doc accept Bulshar’s deal? Please don’t, Doc. And what is Waverly?! That’s the biggest question of all, so I’m guessing the answer will be delayed till the season finale.
That was yet another fun, exciting Wynonna Earp episode, setting up a lot of stuff for the season, I guess. And I want answers!
38) Hope you enjoyed my recap, and, as usual, if you’ve got this far, thank you for reading! If you enjoy my recaps and my blog, please consider supporting it on ko-fi. Thanks!
1) Who is the fucker dragging Waverly away?! And the first thing that Wynonna says, even before she fully regains consciousness, is “Waverly.” I love these two sisters, I love that their relationship is the backbone of this show. Also, WTF.
How the fuck did she get there?
2) And I fucking love Wynonna Earp…
3) Is she… hallucinating her mother? I was wondering why, out of everyone else in her life, she would be fantasizing about her mother, but I didn’t have to wait long to find out. First of all, her ghost-mom reminds her of the survival rules she’d taught her when she was little. But most importantly, she reminds her that no matter how much pain she’s in right now, the pain of losing Waverly will be much worse. And that’s exactly what Wynonna needs to find in her the strength to survive.
4) Is the dude who kidnapped Waverly some time of supernatural weirdo or is he just your run-of-the-mill weird loner guy who lives in the woods and slowly goes batshit crazy? I’m still not sure…
5) Wynonna can’t leave Peacemaker there, can’t she? Why isn’t it like Thor’s hammer? Can’t she just like magically pull it back to her? Anyway, this badass motherfucker is going to climb the fucking rocks wearing a dress and heels. How is not the entire world in love with Wynonna Earp?
6) Oh, he’s not just a weirdo, he’s also a supernatural impersonator. He fucking stole Waverly’s voice and answered the phone pretending to be her. And now Waverly can’t scream for help, that’s just dandy.
7) “You ever seen me move when I’m pissed? I’m a frigging snow cheetah!” How is everything that comes out of her mouth so iconic?
8) So far, Ghost Mom seems to be doing a good job of helping Wynonna keep her head on your shoulders and not act impulsively, which could end up with both her and Waverly dead. She’s following her mom’s survival rules, and it seems to be working, and there’s this little moment when both of them push their hair behind their ears in perfect synchrony…
And I don’t know what I’m to make out of this? Does this mean that Ghost Mom is only a reflection of Wynonna herself? I mean, obviously, she is, it’s a figment of Wynonna’s imagination and it’s what Wynonna believes her mom would do and say in such a situation. But… are we meant to infer that there’s a stronger connection between the two of them than we were led to believe during the course of two seasons? Ghost Mom also called her a “Gibson girl” – her mom’s last name – and also mentioned how Wynonna got her snark from her. Wynonna even jokes that she got the crazy from her. It feels the writers are setting up this relationship as one of the arcs of this season. I guess it makes sense, after Wynonna became a mother herself. But I still don’t know what to make of Ghost Mom or Real Mom, for that matter.
9) Jeremy, Nicole, and Dolls have no idea what’s going on with Wynonna and Waverly, of course, and they’ve figured out that the demon responsible for the massacres is like a Flash demon that got to all their victims within seconds of one another. Also, the massacres may continue. Cool. Cool cool cool.
10) Jeremy is the biggest sweetheart in this show and he’s the biggest fan of literally everyone. I felt so bad for him when Dolls told him to get a life or something and stop bothering him, and did Jeremy get butthurt? No, he told Dolls he’s fighting for him, and my heart swelled a little. He’s the best. He was such a great addition to the gang. At least Dolls had the decency to indulge Jeremy with his pop culture references before leaving, and it was a nice way to say he was sorry and that he appreciates everything that Jeremy does.
11) OMFG, Wynonna was a Hanson fan, just like I was!
12) Not liking Ghost Mom right now…
WYNONNA: Why me, though? You never brought Willa or Waverly, it was always just you and me...
GHOST MOM: Willa was Ward's right from the get-go, and Waverly... She was everyone else's, but you... Ooh, you... You came into this world wailing and kicking just like I was so I wanted to make sure you could survive by yourself. But you know what? Being an heir, it has made you soft.
WYNONNA: What's that supposed to mean?
GHOST MOM: It means... You're leaning on your team of outlaws and misfits.
WYNONNA: They're my people and I trust them.
GHOST MOM: Yeah, well where the hell are they? It's been hours.
WYNONNA: I don't know.
GHOST MOM: Yeah. The moment that you rely on someone... to protect you, be there for you... you're dead.
Is this Wynonna’s own fear, that her relying so much on her friends is making her soft and weak and vulnerable? Because I feel that her relationships with everyone else have made her stronger. I hate the idea that a hero can’t be vulnerable, you know? It’s like what Buffy says, “my emotions give me power.” If you don’t have bonds and love in your life, is there really a reason to fight at all?
13) “We are the same, Wynonna, and that is what scares you, how similar we are.” Alright, yeah, definitely Wynonna’s own fears manifesting themselves via Ghost Mom. I mean, obviously, she’d conjure up her mom at this moment! Waverly is in danger, and she fears she’s going to fail her just like their mom did…
14) Wow, Doc is having an existential crisis after being shot by Dolls and going to hell in the alternate reality. He’s afraid that being good and doing the right thing is pointless if he’ll end up in hell with all the other demons anyway. But… I mean, he went to hell in that other reality where he had embraced his dark side, you know? How does he know that he’s destined for the same here and now? I wouldn’t think so. And damn, Dolls has some truth bomb…
DOC: We are murderers, you and I. Destined for the dark.
DOLLS: We're not the same. Because I don't need a threat of damnation to fight for the right side.
(EDIT: how did I not realize this was foreshadowing Dolls’s death?! And these words will probably haunt Doc... this was basically their last conversation...)
15) Nicole found the truck!
16) Hannibal the Impersonator is using Waverly’s voice to lure other people into the cabin…
Is he a revenant, though? He seems to be, but what about his weird stealing-voices power? Do revenants get special powers? I mean, Bobo did, but I thought he was an exception…
17) Jeremy is also so emotionally healthy? Like, he immediately called Doc out on assuming the worst of people and basically told him to get over obsessing over losing his immortality. But… why didn’t he call Dolls like Doc told him to? Is he also assuming the worst…? Does he not trust Dolls?
18) Oh, my god, Waverly and Wynonna’s entire “charades” conversation was fucking priceless!
19) I laughed and I also awww-ed.
DOC: You trust Wynonna's instincts?
NICOLE: I helped her kill the revenant she had sex with!
DOC: Let me rephrase. Do you trust her instincts about Waverly?
20) Are Waverly and Wynonna really having the you-didn’t-tell-me-about-mom talk right now, in this life or death situation? Of course they are.
21) I DIED!
Wynonna doesn’t have Peacemaker, so how is she going to fight the revenant? It should be interesting to see her fight without her special power…
22) So Jeremy also assumed the worst about Dolls. Interesting.
23) Like Buffy said, when scary things are scared, that’s bad news. The revenant almost shit his pants when Waverly mentioned Bulshar. Wynonna used her wits and booby-trapped him, so good on her. But look who’s stalking…
Does he have nazis with him or something?
24) So… Waverly didn’t take it too well. And I get it, it feels like she’s been made a fool by everyone she's ever trusted. She doesn’t even know who her real parents are…
25) Nicole is going to climb down the rocks and get Peacemaker back like a boss.
26) Uh-oh… I guess Jeremy was right…
Why is he saying that Wynonna is going to need Waverly more than ever?
27) WTF!!!
Fucking ghost terminator nazis!
28) Nicole is literally hanging from a wire and trying to get Peacemaker back! And I think Dolls is going to wolf out and get rid of the fucking nazi but will probably lose his soul in the process? I didn’t think the chilliest part of the episode would be a fucking voice-stealing cannibal revenant…
29) Nicole is asking Wynonna to let go of the wire… what the fuck is this episode doing to me?
30) Why did he smile before doing this…?
Was he saying goodbye? Was that why he said that Wynonna was going to need Waverly more than ever?
31) He’s dead, and Nicole is trying to resuscitate him, and Wynonna and Doc are losing their shit… I wasn’t expecting this in episode two…
She doesn’t want to leave his side. Damn.
32) Wow. This is heavier stuff than I’d expected at the beginning of the season, especially after the heartbreak of giving birth to Alice only to lose her in the season finale. I feel like this episode is a game-changer, obviously because of Dolls’ death, who is going to take up his role? I mean, Nicole had become sort of his disciple, but no one can really fill his shoes, can they? There’s also the heavy emphasis on Wynonna’s relationship with her mother, which I think will definitely be one of this season’s arcs. And there’s the dooming presence of Bulshar, who still needs to introduce himself in a more memorable way.
I don’t know what to make of Dolls’ death, though. Personally, I wasn’t so attached to his character as to feel devastated, though I was truly shocked and if Wynonna cries, then I cry. There’s also this nagging feeling that no one can be really dead in supernatural shows unless TPBT wish it so, you know? There’s always a small chance he might return, in different forms – either through flashbacks or because he might actually be brought back from the dead.
Anyway, I’m super excited to see where this season takes us!
33) Hope you enjoyed my recap, and, as usual, if you’ve got this far, thank you for reading! If you enjoy my recaps and my blog, please consider supporting it on ko-fi. Thanks!
She’s taking a holiday from dealing, happily vacationing in the land of Not Coping. When she breaks down, it’s going to be awful…
2) The idiot revenants are mocking her about her baby, they truly are stupid. Yep, she’s sweeping the floor with their asses.
3) Jeremy grew a mustache wtf.
He’s going full-blown bromance with Doc, isn’t he?
4) Doing a power walk with your posse…
EXPECTATION…
REALITY...
5) Who the fuck are these super extra, grill-wearing, purple-smoke hipsters?
The girl just touched the Sheriff and he invited them in and holy hell! They’re vampires! We got vampires! How did I not immediately guess they were vampires when I described them as extra and hipsters? Of course!
They’re very subtle…
So, just with a touch, they can glamour people? Is that it?
6) Waves and Nicole are in bed, and they’re all jokey about Nicole’s marriage and Waverly’s make-out sesh with Rosita, so I guess they’ve already worked through their issues. It would’ve been very interesting to actually see them work it out, and not just have this post-coital love bubble.
7) Why is this turning me on?
I guess it’s also turning them on a little bit, so we’re all on the same team… That is, until Doc brings up their baby, who is 19 weeks by now. Ouch.
8) She really wants to make things right with him… I guess my ship is not dead yet…
He won’t touch me unless we’re training and he won’t talk to me unless he’s angry. So I keep him training and angry.
So he’s obviously still not over the “giving up the baby” thing, which makes total sense. But how is Wynonna feeling? I’m guessing she’s absolutely wrecked, hence all the drinking and partying. I wonder when or how the show will address this.
9) Hmm. Waverly brings up a memory about their mother, but Wynonna doesn’t mention how she’s been seeing her. I’m guessing this is a Big Secret that’s bound to come out during this season, right? The question is, why did their mother leave and how and why did Wynonna keep in touch with her?
10) Nedley is wearing a scarf around his neck and I’m guessing he’s been bitten.
11) Well, someone enjoyed a good ol’ feast, didn’t they?
Nedley was very adamant that “they didn’t do this”, that is to say, the vamps. And now Nicole is saying that these massacres have been happening since the 1920s, carried out by a group self-ascribed as the Cult of Bulshar. Cool. Cool cool cool.
12) Well, some light has been shined on those final scenes from the season 2 finale. Nicole, quite conveniently, waited nearly 5 months to tell Wynonna and Waverly that when Mercedes mentioned Bulshar it rang a bell, and Dolls gave her some BBD files – the ones we saw her holding in the last scene of the season 2 finale. Waverly seems to have no issue with this, but Wynonna is definitely taken aback by learning this information just now. I think she feels she hasn’t been let in on some key information about the demon that has been after her family for ages. Of course, Nicole and Dolls were probably just trying to protect the Earps and figure out if they could fight this demon without endangering them. But it is kind of odd that Dolls has chosen Nicole as his confidant and that he’s purposefully withholding information from Wynonna...
13) Nicole seems to be triggered watching the whole crime scene, which coupled with the fact that she mentioned having heard the name Bulshar before probably means she was either A) the daughter of one of the people attacked by the cult, or B) witnessed one of these massacres as a child, or C) both.
14) Cool, Waverly and Nicole have both been glamoured. And the vampire boss bitch told Waves she needs them as “tributes.” Is this some Hunger Games shit?
15) Oh, sweet tween Jeremy…
16) So…
Is their mom in a mental hospital or in prison? It looks like a prison, but she also looks a bit… deranged? But can it be a prison? We saw Wynonna meeting her in a mountain or something like that… Anyway, Wynonna keeps asking her to tell her more about Bulshar, but she won’t budge. She doesn’t trust Wynonna will be able to break the curse and she fears she might endanger Waverly.
17) The vampires want to turn Doc into one of their own. The only catch, in order to prove that it’s really him, he has to endure torture. I don’t know who is in charge of the recruiting division in this vampire undertaking but that’s not how you lure new recruits…
18) Okay, so it’s a prison. But what is she in prison for? And why does Waverly seem to believe she simply left them? Okay, Wynonna just answered my question – their Dad told them to hide the truth from Waverly, which makes sense when she was a little kid, but I’m betting she’ll be super pissed when she finds Wynonna has been keeping this tidbit of info for almost two decades?
19) Wait, what did I miss? Dolls just turned towards Wynonna all meaningful looks and what-not, he said “Wynonna”, they stared at each other, and then he just got off the car – and left his cheeseburger. Who the fuck does that? I hate it when characters do that shit with food in movies and TV shows! But seriously, what did I miss? Was this a “Dolls almost confessed his feelings but thought better of it” moment? Or was it just his lactose intolerance kicking in...?
20) Cool. So now, everyone but Wynonna and Doc is under the vampires’ influence.
21) So, the Vampire Boss Bitch and Doc have history. Go figure. She called him an asshole, so she must know him pretty well.
22)
23) So everyone has been glamoured, pimped up, and now they’re taking down Wynonna. I guess it’s all in Doc’s hands, now.
24) So, the vampires’ plan is to either turn or eat everyone in town. And everyone is super cool with it because they’ve been glamoured. Except Nicole seems to be remembering something, she’s called herself a survivor, the survivor… of one of the Cult of Bulshar’s massacres, maybe?
25)
I thought Dolls was glamoured, too. He’s either telling the truth or he’s setting Wynonna up.
26) “We’re gonna need more stakes.” Wynonna is going full Buffy and I’m fucking here for it!
27) Not… your best… zinger, Wynonna…
28) Vengabus, ooh, that reference is carbon-dated! And I instantly got it, what does that say about me?
29) OMFG, when these vampires get staked they turn into purple dust! But… wait… when they arrive, they do it surrounded by a cloud of purple fog? Does that mean they use other vampires’ ashes to give some pizzazz to their entrance?
And as each vampire gets staked, the glamoured people become unglamoured and they are starting to kick some vamp ass! I mean, look at Nedley!
30) “I will not get ate while tied to a stripper pole.” You know, good for you, Doc, we all need to set goals for ourselves. And that’s as good as any.
31) Oookay…?
She told him they’ve done things to her she doesn’t want done to him, and asked him to stay in the Vengabus, but of course, he didn’t.
32) He just jumped through a window and staked a vampire who was about to eat Nedley and now they’re smiling at each other and slowly walking towards each other and I’m dead!
They look so hot, why aren’t they kissing already?
33) Wait, is this Bulshar?
Is this how they’ve shown the face of the Big Bad? An underwhelming reveal with little warning?
34) These two…
They’re finally acting amicably, without angry training or silence treatment. Wynonna feels elated that he’s having a drink with her again like they used to, and they toast to Alice, which is the elephant in the room. I mean, who better to understand how each of them feels about giving up their daughter than each other? They really need to be each other’s person for this.
35) YES!!
My OTP is alive!
(it kind of looks like Wynonna has a mustache, though)
36) Hahahaha! Dolls’ face when Wynonna’s compares Waverly’s “warm and tingly” description to peeing in the shower…
37) So, Dolls is egging Wynonna on to talk to Waverly, I’m guessing about their mom, and he can’t help but take a jab at her for choosing Doc, and I thought he was over the whole fighting with Doc over Wynonna? I guess not.
38) Okay, I totally saw this coming:
NICOLE: I’m starting to think there was a Cult of Bulshar survivor once. And it was me.
39) And just when Wynonna was about to tell Waverly about their mother…
And now Waverly is being dragged from the wreck and taken away?!
I did not see that coming!
40) This was an interesting season opener, with a much lighter tone than I expected and barely touching on the unresolved issues from last season. Bulshar seems to be the Big Bad, but for one, his reveal was lackluster at best. Suddenly, the camera cut to his face and that was it. He was just standing there. Not too ominous for a Big Bad. Nicole is about to be given a Big Backstory, so I guess that will be interesting to find out, although I think I would’ve been completely fine with her just being a regular human who stumbled upon the supernatural, you know? Jeremy is still having a bro crush on Doc, and I love it, especially because it goes both ways (I totally caught Doc telling the revenant that Jeremy is a vegetarian, which continues to cement the fact that they know each other very well, they’re buddies!) Waverly and Nicole seem to be on solid ground, but I wonder how figuring out where she comes from will affect Waverly’s relationships with Nicole and Wynonna. All in all, a solid, fun episode, although probably not one of the show’s most memorable ones. Very excited to see where this season takes us, though.
40) Hope you enjoyed my recap, and, as usual, if you’ve got this far, thank you for reading! If you enjoy my recaps and my blog, please consider supporting it on ko-fi.Thanks!
1) The writers are actively trying to use Waverly to awaken the lesbian/bisexual in all their confused female viewers, right?
2) Wynonna just fucking did a backflip WHILE PREGNANT and then proceeded to high-five her unborn child, and here I am, eating pancakes and struggling to reach the remote that fell under my chair.
She’s quickly climbing up my favorite characters list, though.
3) Wynonna is not the only one interested in Doc’s ring, apparently.
And this old demon dude reminded me of the old demon dude from Buffy? You know, the one that sliced Dawn up in the tower? Same creepy old evil guy vibes.
4) Dolls just gave Rosita a gift card so that she can take Doc on a couple’s retreat or something? Weird way to get rid of the competition, but okay.
5) WYNONNA ASKED THE NIGHT OFF AND THE HOUSE TO HERSELF BECAUSE SHE INVITED DOC OVER FOR DINNER AND I MIGHT JUST DIE OF ALL THE FEELS.
6) They found The Creepster’s body, and I’ve never been so happy to see a carbonized corpse, hallelujah!
7) The Creepster’s sister is trying to make up excuses for his creepy, criminal behavior and Nicole is not having any of it but Waverly told her to stop... telling the truth? And I get that they’re not seeing eye to eye at the moment and I do not condone what Nicole did and I get that Waverly is trying to be respectful of the Creepster’s sister’s feelings, but… being dead does not erase all his wrongdoings and awful behavior, people do not automatically become saints once they die. If you were an awful person while you were alive, then you should be remembered as such. And the fact that his sister is trying to justify his behavior by saying that he loved Waverly “in his own way” is vile.
8) Doc bought the picture for Wynonna and the baby and I knew the old demon guy must have put some kind of glamour on him (or it?) because the painting did not look as creepy when he decided to buy it…
9) Wynonna made dinner for Doc and she’s feeding him and he’s pretending it’s tasty and this is everything I have ever wanted.
10) And the painting keeps changing…? Is it alive?
The freaking doll is straight-up staring at them.
11) The cupboard just opened by itself when Wynonna said the third seal was Doc’s ring and I’m here wondering if it is just a coincidence or if some Paranormal Activity shit is about to go down. I’m hoping it is the latter, tbh.
12) Well, the reason Wynonna was trying to sweeten Doc up is that she wants his ring so that she can break it and release Clootie and release the demon that is WORSE than Clootie so that she can kill them both, while pregnant, I presume. Doc is less than excited, of course. And now the creepy doll is out of the painting and I’m 99% sure she’ll show up soon…
13) Rosita invited Waverly to the spa and this is definitely one of the scenes I’d seen a million times on my dash when I hadn’t watched the show. I’m trying to figure out why? Is it only because it’s two girls wearing bikinis in a hot tub? Or does something relevant to the plot or to the characters development happen here?
14) And yes, something creepy is watching both Waverly and Wynonna.
15) I’VE DIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN. THIS IS HEAVEN.
Wynonna is trying to convince Doc to willingly give up his ring so that she can destroy it and release both Clootie and the very, very scary unnamed demon, and he’s not having it. He believes destroying the ring would be his death sentence, and Wynonna argues that he’ll just be as mortal as any of them. Doc is truly terrified of dying, isn’t he? I guess the question is, does he love his agelessness more than he loves Wynonna…?
16) And now she called him selfish – which is kind of accurate, to be fair – but that’s not going to get you what you want, you impulsive doofus! He wants to leave but they can’t find the keys, and I’m 99% certain the little girl from the painting stole them. Yep.
17) Wynonna just stopped Doc from leaving by baby-bumping him????
18) Doc told Wynonna how he hid and listened to his dying mother cry and beg and pray every night until she died, and you kind of understand why he wants to hold on to life so much, right?
19) Waverly just texted Nicole…
WAVERLY: “Dear Control Freak. I will talk to you when I want to talk to you. Until then, have a nice life hurting the people that you love.”
And now I’m afraid something terrible will happen to Nicole which will make Waverly regret sending this text.
20) Oh. I get it now.
WTF Waverly! This is a million times worse than the text! Also, kind of love how Waverly got all hot and bothered with Rosita’s SCIENCE TALK.
21) I TAKE IT BACK, THIS IS WORSE!!!
22) And now he says that he came back to save her from his sisters? WTF, Frosty Creepster!
23) By the way, IS ROSITA REALLY DEAD?!
24) Wynonna and Doc are arguing about the ring and they’re about to physically fight and this creepy doll is responsible, right?
25) Oh, shit, they weren’t dead, the creeper’s sisters were NOT DEAD!
The widows stole their faces?! I guess they probably wish they were dead.
26) Ugh, Wynonna and Doc’s argument really escalated and she’s saying some awful stuff and now…
…which she said she would never do? I gotta believe it was the creepy doll’s influence.
27) ROSITA SAVES THE DAY!
WTF!!!!!!
She’s been a revenant all along?!!!! Is that why Doc offered her protection when they first started working together?
28) Dolls hung up on Jeremy because he was being annoying and Jeremy just threw himself in front of Dolls to save him from the Widow!
29) Oh, no, Doc just said he’s always known Wynonna would be the death of him and threw the ring at her and…
Phew, Wynonna shot the doll, but the things they said… they’re out there. And while they may have used the cop-out of saying it was the influence of the creepy doll, they basically admit that the doll might have brought those feelings to the surface but they were there, to begin with. Awkward, am I right?
30) This is as close to an “I love you” as he’ll ever get, right?
WYNONNA: Doc, this is it's about something bigger than us.
DOC: The demon Clootie.
WYNONNA: Our baby. I mean, I need to do that on my own terms, but I promise I won't break the seal. Not until after. We we need a plan. But when that plan is in place, I will break it with you by my side.
DOC: Do you swear?
WYNONNA: I do.
Fuck, it’s almost as if he was proposing, isn’t it?
This show fucking plays with my emotions because I feel these two are not getting back together (I may or may not have seen gifs of Wynonna and Dolls as a couple... oops!) and yet they keep putting them in situations like this, and I feel like it’s baiting, you know?
31) So…
She paralyzed him, told him she’d be his girl, and proceeded to… eat him? I’m not sure I understand what’s going on.
32) And the other sister seems to have figured out where the third seal is. Coolio.
33) I KNEW IT! Waverly thinks she’s half-revenant!
34) OH FUCK!
I knew that text meant Nicole would be in danger and Waverly would regret sending it! But why is the widow there??? That’s not where the third seal is, is it?
35) Fun episode, I really liked how the characters were paired up and sort of on adventures of their own but which are all connected to the main arc somehow. But it lacked the epicness of the previous episode, which is definitely one of my favorites so far. Of course, this one served to pave the way for the season finale as we quickly approach it. Can’t wait to watch the next one!
36) Hope you enjoyed my recap, and, as usual, if you’ve got this far, thank you for reading! If you enjoy my recaps and my blog, please consider supporting it on ko-fi.Thanks!
1) Waverly confronts Bobo and the widows, certain that Bobo won’t hurt her. He admits he might not, but he won’t help her either. In an uncharacteristically honest moment, he admits that caring about her has only brought him pain. Waverly quips that no one said parenthood was easy. And I’M FREAKING OUT? IS THIS HER WAY OF CONFIRMING BOBO IS HER FATHER?!
2) Thankfully, Wynonna arrives on time, but Peacemaker is completely useless now that the seal is broken and this MOFO is waking up…
Shit is about to go down and I’M NOT READY. I’m really curious to see what Clootie looks like, though, I feel he’ll look something like the Master.
3) The sisters take a breather before all hell breaks loose, and I appreciate it…
You know what else I appreciate? Wynonna’s top priority – making sure Doc is not dead.
4) Well, Dolls is not dead, which is good, but not the answer I was expecting.
5) I truly appreciate the brief moment of levity…
6) So, this is what she had figured out before she went poof…
7) Wynonna is terrified that Doc might be dead now that the ring is broken. I’m Jeremy, btw.
8) I’m sorry, but is there anything more badass than trying to save the world while you’re about to give FUCKING BIRTH?!
9) WTF! Clootie is going to have Wynonna’s baby for dessert???!!
10) Oooh, I kind of saw this coming but I didn’t want to get my hopes up!
MERCEDES: Actually, I want a separation.
MERCEDES: Chopped my way into the 21st century. The world has changed. Hell, look at Wynonna Earp. She is 10 times the gunslinger Wyatt ever was and he put Bulshar in the ground! I want that ring!
I’m really into this new form of empowerment? Evil ladies also need to break free from the misogynistic ties to their evil lords. You go, Glenn Coco! Or Elsa, I guess…
She just took off and buried Bobo, Clootie and her sister. Does this mean that the season’s Big Bad was Mercedes all along? And not Clootie! Damn, I really love that plot twist!
11) The Iron Witch says the plate only works as a shield, and these two badass motherfuckers are not having it…
Can they look any more badass?! And I really wish they had allowed Wynonna to say fucking!
12) Dolls finds Doc at his home…
He’s having an existential crisis over being mortal and he’s basically contemplating suicide. And I almost believed he couldn’t take not being ageless anymore, but it was the possibility of living a mortal life in a Wynonna-less world that was pushing him over the edge because the second he heard she was still alive…
It’s like his soul returned to his body… and now he’s willing to die but for an entirely different reason, and I swear to God, I choked up during this whole scene. Does that make sense? Am I an idiot?
13) I guess there’s no better time for confessions than when facing the possibility of absolute and total obliteration. In a few seconds, Waverly breaks the news to Wynonna that Nicole is married and that she’s not Wynonna’s sister. Wynonna’s reply is quick and certain…
A lot of emphasis is placed on the bloodline in this show, considering the whole hereditary curse. But nothing as volatile as blood would ever get in the way of Waverly and Wynonna. They are sisters if ever sisters there were.
I truly love how there was no hesitation. At the same time, I wonder if the lack of hesitation means Wynonna had considered this possibility before?
14) Okay, Wynonna literally has one shot to kill Clootie, get rid of the Widows, and break the curse. Cool. Cool cool cool cool.
15) Jeremy and Nicole are having this super sweet moment…
JEREMY: And, uh, I stay because I don't fit in here. But none of you ask me to. I'm allowed to be me.
NICOLE: You're part of the family. And being part of the family means...
AND THEN THIS FUCKING ELSA FROM HELL BURST INTO THE ROOM AND NEARLY GAVE ME A HEART ATTACK…
And please don’t tell me that we’re using the “put Nicole in peril” schtick again! And we’re adding Jeremy into the mix! Just great!
16) THE BABY IS FUCKING COMING AMIDST ALL THIS DEBACLE!
17) I’M FUCKING DEAD.
She’s my queen, I love her, I’d sell my soul for Wynonna Earp, I’ve said it.
18) Oh, the other McBitch just arrived and is threatening Waverly while Elsa says Wynonna is the weapon she’s been looking for, and what the fuck is going on?
19) Wynonna’s sigh of relief and barely noticeable smile when she sees Doc is alive, though…
I leave for these moments.
20) NOT THESE FUCKING MOMENTS, THOUGH! WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING?!
21) UGH THESE TWO MOTHERFUCKERS ALMOST GOT ME!
Two birds, one stone. These two! They could convey their plan using a code they could only understand! Why aren’t they together?!
But there’s still Clootie and Bobo, right…
And the baby is coming…
22) Ugh the fire-assholes have shown up, they offed Wynonna’s doctor and they’re coming after the baby!
23) WHAT’S THE FUCKING PLAN? WHAT WILL THEY DO WITH THE BABY? IS NICOLE GOING TO TAKE THE BABY AWAY? They’re talking about crossing the triangle…
24) WTF ROSITA!!!!!!!
THIS FUCKING EPISODE DOESN’T LET UP!
25) Bobo has gone Spike…
So Clootie or Bulshar or whoever sucked something out of Bobo and Bobo offered up Waverly as the Big Bad’s new bride WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK!
26) Great. JUST FUCKING GREAT.
27) Oh, thank god, something worked out!
Wynonna basically willed Peacemaker into accepting Waverly as an Earp!
28) Brendan Fehr is saying that Wynonna is going to corrupt the baby and screw it up and I’m like… Brendan Fehr, I was rooting for you!
29) Damn, Dolls!
At least they died in their element. Get it?
30) When you try to come up with a good comeback and you just…
31) I guess I’ll just have to get used to Bobo never being back for more than two episodes…
32) I’m not crying, you are…
I'm the Earp heir. They're always coming for me and everything I love. I don't want to. I didn't realise how much I wouldn't want to. You're the coolest thing I ever did. You're going to have it much better than me. I promise.
And Waverly is taking the baby away and Wynonna is asking her to make sure that Doc gets a moment with him and I’m here, dying.
33) Waverly and the baby just crossed over the border and neither of them burnt, which means that the baby is Doc’s and the revenants don’t have any claim over it. But what does this mean for Waverly? Whose daughter is she, then?
34) Wynonna just offed the whole gang of revenants, but it doesn’t really feel satisfying at all when her baby is being sent away minutes after being born…
35) Did Jeremy just used Waverly and Nicole’s ship name?! HE FUCKING DID!
36) Perry is taking the baby as a way to thank Wynonna for saving his life. Cool dude.
37) And now Doc is meeting the baby and I WON’T SURVIVE THIS SHIT!
I CAN’T BREATHE. EVERYTHING HURTS.
38) Bobo just got a holiday for one in the well, and he admits that he never said Waverly was his daughter, just kin. I repeat, what does this mean for Waverly? Who is her father? Doc confesses that when Dolls shot him, he was sent to hell. It remains to be seen how long he was there - if it was a few hours or a few centuries, and what impact this will have on him…
39) Wynonna named the baby after both of their mothers and I’m a mess…
This is not the happy ending I wanted for these two.
40) There’s so much I don’t understand…
The woman narrating is Wynonna’s mother? And she’s ALIVE? Has she been alive this whole time? What about the secretive look between Dolls and Nicole? Is she having second thoughts about her divorce? And what about the folder she was holding with info about Bulshar? Is she working with Dolls behind Waverly’s back? And how can Jeremy and Waverly be acting so carefree when everything is a mess?
If Wynonna’s mom is alive, there’d better be an explanation as to why this was never brought up before. It doesn’t make any sense!
I need Alice in Wynonna and Doc’s life, okay? This can’t be the end of that storyline, I just won’t accept it.
41) Amazing season finale, full of plot twists and emotional moments. I’ll admit I shed more than one tear. I truly can’t believe how the show continues to be so fast-paced and engaging. There never is one minute, one line, one scene wasted – everything has meaning and is relevant to the plot, and it never lets up and I’m so excited to see what they have to offer in season 3, and hopefully, I’ll catch up before season 4 premieres!
This show is quickly climbing up the ladder of my very short and exclusive list of favorite shows, I swear. I’m already looking forward to rewatching it and discovering things I’d missed the first time around.
42) Hope you enjoyed my recap, and, as usual, if you’ve got this far, thank you for reading! If you enjoy my recaps and my blog, please consider supporting it on ko-fi.Thanks!
1) They’re doing a Dolls retrospective in the previously-on and oh God, it’s going to be one of those episodes, am I going to cry my heart out?
2) Wynonna is sad, drunk, and angry – a dangerous combination. Yep.
3) God, they even changed the music for this episode… They’re really going for emotional devastation, aren’t they?
4) So, the vampire lady that had Doc all tied up in the season opener is back. He called her Countessa, but then she begged him to say her name, and I wonder if this has some other meaning? Like, maybe she needs him to say her name for some spell or something? I don’t know. Anyway, apart from being a vampire, she moonlights as a seer. And she tells Doc that she’d seen a warrior would die – Dolls – and that he should give up trying to get with Wynonna because she loved Dolls, too, and he’d be forever competing with Dolls’ ghost. Ouch.
5) Really, dude?
6) Waverly and Nicole are having a very important conversation that everyone should have with their loved ones – what happens with my remains when I die? I’ve had this conversation several times with different people and they’re all very much aware of what I want to be done with my body, but I guess I’ll be dead and they can do whatever they want and I’ll never find out. Anyway, Nicole’s wish is to have a sky funeral, which sounds whimsical and cute but it’s actually pretty gross.
7) Uh-oh. Waverly has just found out that her father – well, not her father-father, you know what I mean – had only made arrangements for her mother’s and Wynonna’s burials, not hers… and that’s so unnecessarily cruel? Did they adopt her or were they charged with her? I really need to find out what’s the whole story about Waverly and the Earps!
8) Wynonna is in denial. She continues binge-drinking and shooting Peacemaker, but she’s not finding any peace. It’s Doc who can finally comfort her and convince her to pay their respects to Dolls. They actually comfort each other…
9) Who dis?
10) Waverly is kind of freaking out, saying she’s hungry and how that reminds her that Dolls will never eat again and then she starts laughing (her little breakdown reminded me a bit of Anya’s in The Body…) and Doc then smashes a glass against the wall (kind of like what Xander did in The Body…) They’re preparing a wake for Dolls at Shorty’s, which I guess we’ll end up being more like a sad party with everyone getting drunk and shots being fired because nothing can go right in Purgatory, not even a wake.
11) So, I took an instant liking to Star Hand guy for some reason, and thankfully, he seems to be Dolls’ friend. Doc is demanding evidence, as he should. Question is, how did he find out Dolls was dead? Is he a Black Badge agent, too? Did he come here to say his goodbyes or is he going to be a mainstay? And with this I’m reminded of…
12) Hmm. I have some questions…
NICOLE: My parents were travelling again and they told me I could go to this music festival with my aunt and uncle. Here.
WAVERLY: In the Ghost River Triangle?
NICOLE: There was an attack. A man in leather. So much screaming and blood.
WAVERLY: The demon Dolls killed at the cliff? Bondage Bob?
NICOLE: For years, my parents just told me that everybody died in a forest fire and that I had... I had somehow escaped, but... you know, it just didn't explain the nightmares.
WAVERLY: Yeah, I've... I've heard them.
NICOLE: Last spring, when... Widow Mercedes said his name... Bulshar... it was like this shotgun went off in my head. And Dolls helped me. He got me files, he... he told me that... Black Badge had been covering up these massacres for years. The Cult of Bulshar.
I’m not sure I’m on board with this backstory they gave Nicole literally out of nowhere? And the same demon that committed this massacre is the guy Dolls killed on the hill? The one Waverly names “Bondage Bob”? I just… I don’t totally buy it. I know it could be completely possible for her to have suppressed these memories because of trauma, but… it all feels a bit thrown together at the last minute? Why couldn’t she just be a human, a kickass human but a human nonetheless? Why does she also need a supernatural and traumatizing backstory? I don’t know, I’m still a bit iffy about the whole thing.
13) Will this turn into a supernatural version of “P.S. I Love You”?
14) Obviously, Dolls knew he was going to die, hence the ominous letter. Wynonna takes it out on Jeremy because he knew and he was trying to help Dolls but he didn’t say anything to anyone else, trying to respect Dolls’ wishes. Wynonna feels betrayed, but I don’t really get why? First of all, all of them know they can die at any time, that’s part of the gig, right? So yeah, Dolls being aware of his own mortality shouldn’t be that surprising considering his line of work. Second of all, they all witnessed that this dragon-power was taking a toll on him, didn’t they? Am I crazy? So yeah, Wynonna might have pretended it wasn’t an issue, but she knew, they all knew… I guess it’s easy when you’re mourning someone’s death to have someone to blame, but Jeremy hardly deserves it.
15) So, Quinn, Xavier’s friend, is all chummy with Doc and I’m here for it. Wynonna asks Doc if he knew Dolls was dying, and Quinn is like “duh! Of course, he was!”, which was exactly my reaction. Wynonna is not an idiot, so she had to be in complete denial not to see that he was dying. Anyway, apparently, he was also Black Badge.
16) Oh, great. The fucking revenants stole all the serum Doc had concocted for Dolls and are streamlining it. This should end well.
17) So, Jeremy placed a coded message for Dolls’ friends to come to his funeral. See? How can you be angry at Jeremy?
18) Wynonna wonders why Dolls didn’t attempt to do anything to get better, and the answer is blatantly obvious for both Quinn and Doc – because of her. I’m guessing she’ll take this information to further flagellate herself over Dolls’ death.
19) The vampire lady, Katalin, stole Waverly’s purse, for some reason, maybe she’s a klepto or something, but she didn’t use any of her vampire powers to do it? Like, she just grabbed and took off, awkwardly running in her heels? Kind of disappointing, but also super hilarious.
20) Ay…
21) Waverly enlists Doc to help her get Dolls’ letter back, and they sneak out all secretive, but… it’s a wake with literally 5 freaking guests… I think the three people left will eventually notice they’re gone?
22) “Why torture yourself? I don’t.” HA! Yeah, right!
23) Quinn suggests that Black Badge is not really gone – well, duh – and that they might come to retrieve what’s left of Dolls…
24) Yep. A bunch of jacked-up revenants have just crashed the party. Coolio.
That’s alright, Wynonna’s got it.
25) I do appreciate a good early 00s callback…
26) WTF
27) OMG, Waverly trying to lose it and turn the table but realizing it’s too heavy and then just throwing the cards on the floor and giving a little shout? *chef’s kiss*
28) Oh, shit, Katalin now knows what Waverly is?! What is she???
29) Aw, Nicole just set Wynonna straight, told her that everyone is grieving Dolls just as much as she is and that she should go apologize to Jeremy. I do really love their quiet yet strong bond.
30) Quinn is fucking torturing Jeremy with a goddamn stapler and why does everyone keep treating Jeremy like crap? Quinn wants to get Jeremy’s drugs to become a dragon and storm BB headquarters. Wynonna gets through to him by admitting that she is also haunted by the ghosts of the people she lost, but their best revenge is to go on living. Be brave. Live. For me.
31) Ouch, I didn’t know that something as small as Wynonna giving Quinn Dolls’ badge would hurt like a bitch, but it did.
32) Damn, damn, damn.
That whole scene simply destroyed me. Wynonna finally decided to cremate Dolls’ body to prevent BB from coming after it to continue experimenting on him. And then they bury him, each of them placing a personal item that symbolizes their relationship to Dolls. It fucking devastated me.
33) Waverly asks Wynonna what her plans are for when she passes, casually mentioning that she doesn’t have a spot on the Earp’s burial site. Wynonna doesn’t make a big deal of it, and instead, tells Waverly that they will live for about another 80 years and then, they’ll be buried together at the homestead. That’s all the reassurance Waverly needs. She might not be an Earp, but she’s Wynonna’s sister, and that’s all that matters.
34) Damn, Dolls.
35) Does Katalin spend the whole day playing with her Tarot cards? #quarantinemood
So… she admits that she only stole Waverly’s purse to get Doc’s attention. They have a short conversation about the days of yore and then…
Damn Doc, he can’t just keep it in his pants, can he?
36) That was an emotional rollercoaster of an episode. Dolls wasn’t one of the characters I loved the most, but I understand how important he was to the narrative and to each of the characters, so I’m glad to see he got a proper send-off. I really hate it when shows gloss over the aftermath of a main character’s death and skip forward all the grieving and uncomfortableness of mourning. That being said, this being a supernatural show and all, I’m skeptical that this was the last we’ll see of Dolls. Anything can happen, right?
37) Hope you enjoyed my recap, and, as usual, if you’ve got this far, thank you for reading! If you enjoy my recaps and my blog, please consider supporting it on ko-fi. Thanks!
1) Nicole and Waverly are in the middle of this revenant war…
…and honestly, just before watching this episode, I was wondering what the ramifications of Wynonna vanishing from existence would be. Does this mean that everyone she’s ever killed is still alive…?
2) Oh, so Waverly remembers Wynonna at this point! So what happened between her vanishing and now?! At least I’m glad to hear Waverly knows how to get her back…
3) What the actual fuck! Did they all just blow up?!
That’s a crapload of information for the first minute of an episode!!
4) So… clearly reality has been altered, and old Doc does not have a clue what this Alt!Doc has been doing. Apparently, he’s the “boss” of the revenants now, and he’s killed many of them since the ring has gone missing, which is the alt!reason he was in the well - looking for the ring. But Doc remembers Wynonna and he’s mind is set on finding her, he doesn’t care about the ring at all. I’m really interested in seeing what was the chain of events unleashed by the erasure of Wynonna’s existence…
And damn, he truly is the boss…
5) “Without Wynonna, I’m…” What was he going to say?! I need to know! I need to know how he perceives Wynonna’s influence on him! I know what was her impact on him, but I need to hear him say it!
Well, instead of protecting Rosita and dating her, Alt!Doc kidnapped her and has her shackled in a shed. Of course, after realizing what his alter ego has done, he immediately releases her and asks her to take him to Waverly… GIBSON?! She changed her name! And Xavier is the deputy…
6) Mercedes The Widow is still being held by Xavier, who can’t really remember how they captured her in the first place. She seems to believe that without Wynonna, she and her sister are free and Dolls and the gang will all die. But why would she let Xavier know that he should be looking for a woman?
7) Damn, Alt!Doc is vicious! He scarred Xavier with a knife and apparently blew up the power plant, lumber yard, and Nedley’s house, I’m assuming with nedley in it. DAMN. Doc mentions “her” and it seems to trigger something in Dolls, but it’s not enough yet to make him remember Wynonna. And now they’re throwing Doc in the same cell where the Widow is…
8) Wait…
2015? So this means that in Wynonna-less universe, Nedley was killed even before she got to Purgatory?
9) And now Nicole is putting on lipstick and getting ready for someone’s visit and thank god, it is Waverly… but Waverly is obviously engaged to someone else and Nicole has clearly been pining over her all this time, that’s as sweet as it is sad.
10) Nicole is wearing a wedding ring because she was indeed married - as we learned in the previous episode, but she can’t remember why she’s wearing it. Waverly, on the other hand, is sort of having second thoughts about marrying “him”. (Who is “him” by the way? Is it the douche she was dating at the beginning of the show? Champ, was it?) And even in a completely different universe there’s this undeniable gravitational pull between these two…
Kind of reminds me of Willow and Tara in Tabula Rasa, you know? Memories erased but their mutual attraction survived…
11) Now, that’s interesting… the Widow has run out of poison.
12) So this is who she is marrying?
That’s one of the guys who had made the deal with the demon, using the cup that the Iron Witch used to vanish Wynonna…
Alt!Waverly keeps talking about wanting to escape Purgatory, which is basically the opposite of what our Waverly would do. And we also learn that they almost got married three times… How can’t she tell that’s a huge warning sign and that maybe she shouldn’t be marrying at all?
13) Huh. I guess Alt!Waverly has the same issues with her partner as regular Waverly…
WAVERLY: Because knowing something about me before me is a total invasion of my privacy?
What he found was the MAN who killed Waverly’s family, does that mean we’ll see Bobo again…? (I guess in this reality it wasn’t Wynonna who accidentally shot their dad...)
14) YES MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED!
I’ll never stop wanting Bobo back! And Bobo, just like Dolls, can tell that reality has been altered. He tells Waverly that she has another sister, Wynonna, who is missing and whom she needs to find, but of course, he’s a fucking madman so why would she believe her? There’s one thing, though, Wynonna's influence wasn’t completely erased, considering Bobo still let Waverly leave as a result of Wynonna traveling to the past, saving him and telling him her name was Waverly… So there are echoes of her existence, I guess? Bobo did say she was “shaded”, so that means that she’s been hidden somehow but still there, right?
15) Oh, Widow McBitch is still trying to raise Clootie…
…but it’s not working because it requires both of the widows to perform the ritual. I guess she’s going to break her sister free now.
16) This is some Back to the Future shit, isn’t it?
17) Called it.
At least Doc is out, too.
18) I truly love how Doc got to Jeremy, like, he truly knows Jeremy?
19) Doc next visits Waverly, who is terrified at the sight of him and that probably hurt him badly considering Waverly had always had a soft spot for him. Damn, I really love what they did with Doc in this episode? There’s no Wynonna, and he could’ve so easily jumped on the “I’m the town’s boss” wagon, he was a king in this reality, probably the kind of villain he’d always wanted to be, but Wynonna’s influence and presence is too strong to ignore it. He’s a changed man because of her, and even if she doesn’t exist, he can’t revert to his old ways. There was no hesitation, no “well, maybe I could get used to this...” And to see him going around town trying to rally the troops and convince them that he’s a good guy and that there’s a better reality is just… *chef’s kiss*
20) DAMN HE WENT THERE!
HE ACTUALLY SHOT DOLLS! But at least he feels bad about it…
21) WTF NOW DOLLS FUCKING SHOT DOC!!!
THIS IS THE DARKEST TIMELINE AND I HONESTLY FEEL LIKE TROY...
22) Damn, I know this isn’t real and yet…
At least he told her how to bring Wynonna back before he died, right?
And she fucking cried? She was terrified of him two minutes ago, but when she saw him die it’s like she remembered she loved him?
23) Nicole can’t keep it in her pants and I love it…
WAVERLY: You’d do that for me?
NICOLE: I’d do a lot of things to you.
WAVERLY: “For”. “For” me.
NICOLE: Yeah, that, too.
24) Dolls is about to die and he’s instructing Jeremy to “locate the asset” and “complete the mission” and I have no idea what he’s talking about but I do get this…
And he remembered Wynonna right before he died…
25) And the Iron Witch…
…has lost an eye, had a shitty life and had her sister killed by the season 1 killer Jack of Knives… I guess she’s a cautionary tale for the old saying “be careful what you wish for.”
26) The Iron Witch lifts the glamour for a few seconds, which allows both Waverly and Nicole to remember what brought them here and who Wynonna is, and I just… Waverly’s face when she remembers her sister just about killed me…
And how they describe her? Warm and funny and insanely protective? Yes to all.
27) Bobo is on the loose!
They need to get into the homestead, which has been taken over by revenants, and who better to get you through a sea of revenants than the king of revenants himself, right?
28) Jeremy and Rosita jumped to the conclusion that Black Badge must be behind the time-altering spell by tainting the town’s water supply with drugs… for some reason?
29) Why do I fear that Wynonna will be back right after these two assholes raise their Big Bad of a husband…?
30) Okay, so they need to remove the talisman that Bobo made Waverly bury when she was a little girl, which allowed revenants to walk on the homestead’s ground… and while they’re digging and digging the Widows are getting closer and closer and the revenants are approaching them as well… it’s chaos…
31) “Also, I think I’m gay.” Okay, this is definitely a callback to Willow in Tabula Rasa!!! There’s no way this wasn’t done on purpose!!!
32) And now Rosita is fucking dead! Who else is going to die in this reality? Seriously, I’m getting some serious “The Wish” vibes here…
33) EVERYONE IS GOING TO DIE. Waverly is going to blow the trophy and themselves up to bring Wynonna back!
34) One more for the road…
35) They did it. They blew everything up and now they’re themselves again.
But is Wynonna back….?
36) And Bobo’s still here! What does that mean? I’m happy, but why?! How is that possible? Does that mean that Dolls and Doc are still dead?
37) Bobo is making a deal with the Widows, fuck, Bobo! Don’t betray me like this!
38) Wynonna is back! And she’s still pregnant, thank god! I thought she might have been sent to another dimension where the time goes by at a different pace and the baby might be a teenager by the time they were returned to this reality...
39) OH FUCK.
She’s having the baby at the same time that Clootie’s been raised!
40) Well, that was an interesting episode. I liked the exploration of what Purgatory and everyone’s lives would have been like had Wynonna never existed, although I think some things were not as I would’ve imagined them. I also kind of feel this was something that could’ve been explored a little bit more? It felt kind of rushed. I mean, it was a major spell, erasing someone’s existence, and I guess considering Wynonna’s impact on everyone’s life, her absence was bound to be noticeable, regardless of how powerful the spell was. But for the viewer’s sake, it would’ve been interesting to explore this world a little bit more? I don’t know, I was left wanting. Of course, there’s no reason why we can’t go back to this universe again in the future, right?
And while I found a lot of parallels between this episode and Buffy’s “Tabula Rasa” and “The Wish”, I like this show’s take on the whole “memories erased” trope because of two reasons: 1) Wynonna’s absence and the echoes of her existence were truly felt, kind of like what happened with Peter Bishop in Fringe, and 2) even if the spell was broken, it still had repercussions… Bobo is still alive, for once. And although we’re still lacking an explanation for that, I think it’s interesting the writers chose to make the spell have actual real-life consequences because it’s easy for supernatural shows to explore other realities in this way and then once the spell is broken, nothing of what transpired in the episode has real consequences. But this is not the case here. Like I mentioned, Bobo is back. Clootie is out. And we’re yet to find out if Dolls and Doc are alive…
Everything is a mess going into the season finale and I can’t wait to find out how they wrap up this season!
