So... as I get increasingly more grr about this and less able to politely state my opinion on the matter, I feel like I should put my views on tagging out there and let us all amicably part ways if that's what we need to do, literally zero hard feelings about that. I'm not going to apologize for how I choose to present my fiction and I don't think you should have to apologize for how you like to read it either. We all deserve to get exactly what we want out of our fandom experience and so I think I should clearly state what I'm providing so you know whether or not you'd like to partake.
If I check the box 'Author Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings,' gird your loins and, please, take that as the warning it is. This is now a crapshoot for you, an 'enter at your own risk'-type situation, I will not take on any responsibility for what you choose to do after that. You have taken your destiny into your own hands, Frodo, return the ring to Mordor or hang out in the Shire but don't whine to Sauron about the path you've chosen. Sauron so does not care.
Now, I try very hard not to do that and really the only time I go that route is when I feel whatever warning is going to compromise/spoil the integrity of the story and then I will include that warning in the notes somewhere (and tell you it is there in the tags). Don't then ask me to explicitly put said warning in the tags. I will not.
I tag for things that are potentially triggering, not things you don't like - like angst or unhappy endings because giving away the ending in the tags is a lot like stabbing myself in the eye.
I subscribe to the idea that YOU - the reader - are not entitled to anything. It is my work, I get to choose how it's presented and no one gets to tell me otherwise. However, important warnings are important warnings are important warnings and because very kind people exist out in the interweb and I am not seeking to ruin anyone's day by sharing these things that make me happy, I try to fairly warn for anything potentially triggering because, again, really not trying to ruin your day.
If it is not in the tags, then I've checked my magic box, tagged 'Warning in Notes' and explained there. I try not to leave you high and dry but I'm not going to apologize for how I choose to tell you things I don't even think you deserve to know prior to beginning a story. It's a courtesy, which I partake in because I like you dudes out there, but do not confuse it with a requirement. It is not. That may not be how you view it and that's fine, but it is how I, the creator, do. Again, if we're not on the same side of that, I am not the author for you and please don't feel badly about us ending our association here. I don't because, again, I really am not looking to ruin your day.
Here are SOME COMMENTS DETAILING my thoughts further (and proving that you should not bug me about this anymore because see how I am not awesome at being as nice as I mean to be about it?) That's not to single anyone out, honestly take this as an apology for me being douchier about it than I should have been because none of you were rude, I am just so beyond done answering those. *headdesks*
