The Destiel Fiasco

Actually, going through different posts, I'm so confused as to who to be mad at. So I'm not going to be mad at anyone. I'm just going to sit here and be sad and confused and worried but not mad or accusatory. Maybe Chad Kennedy didn't know what he was doing. Maybe the writers, etc. wanted us to go to him and used him as a "shield." Maybe there's queerbaiting. But the only thing I've got left is hope and faith, just like that woman in the church, even if there's no one to answer the prayers anymore. So I refuse to be mad and I refuse to be ashamed of our fandom. If there's one thing this show has taught me, it is that you have to carry on. I'll keep shipping Destiel and never stop.

This was a fairly typical infidelity fic. The piece starts off mostly chronological right in the middle of their affair, but starts jumping a bit in the end and you can't always tell whether it happens before, during, or after they're officially together. It's nice that the author tried to follow the song (Marchin' On by OneRepublic, which she makes no mention of) but I felt she might have tried too hard to follow it. I felt there should have maybe been another break at the end. The ending was a bit abrupt.

The plot was a bit messy, but it covered a lot of meaningful moments very well and points for the creative disjointed time sequence. The characterisation was interesting; but Harry and Draco both seemed a bit jaded, but perhaps that was due to their middle aged characterisation which is hard to pull off effectively. The writing level was at times a bit over-dramatic, but other than that it was great. Song fics and divorce fics are both a tiny bit overdone, but although the general plot wasn’t very creative it was still very well done and the wrap up was pretty good; an enjoyable story to read.

For some reason, I really *wanted* to give this fic a higher grade, but I just couldn’t bring myself to. At first, I quite liked where it was going. There was nothing special about the writing persay, a bit sparse, but in a non-offending away, but I love the song and I liked that the story was being delivered in segments of time, those moments that happen to all of us during our lives—the moments of joy, laughter, pain, arguments, love... But where this fic went haywire for me is that it started out sequential and then started jumping around with no rhyme or reason. Considering it was a plot that you were supposed to slowly piece together as you read, what with the story starting in the middle, with Harry and Draco having an affair, it needed to be done in some sort of sequential order, otherwise there’s no way to make sense of any of it.

Characterization was more or less accurate, no major complaints, but there wasn’t enough development and connection with the characters to get it much higher a score in this department. Nonetheless, a fine mark here. However, the other place that really brought it down was the wrap up. It didn’t make any sense to me really—I mean, Draco *left* Astoria, *and* Harry had a divorce... and yet... for some reason there’s Draco with Astoria 20 years later and Harry and Draco not together? It doesn’t make sense, how did that happen? How did Draco go back to Astoria after all that? If that’s truly the direction the author wanted to go with it, she should have included more explanation because it leads to huge plot holes. I would have prefered to see the segments like that, but then have it be epilogue compliant (which is possible that is what she was trying to do... but it’s really hard to tell considering the divorces...) and *then* showed the final segment with Draco becoming elderly and dying as a “loved man”.

So A for effort but it just doesn’t translate for me in the end.
