From the Corner Desk://Elliott Sellers
Oh how the game has changed...Before we even knew what the game was really all about I don't think I could have imagined that we'd arrive at a time when someone could Direct/Produce/Shoot/Edit and Color their own work quickly and cheaply. Sure it's been done before, but now we stand before a new breed of artists using video as their format and creating visual masterpieces that play out for us on websites. It almost makes me sad that we are viewing their work amidst our twitter and tumblr feeds, facebook notifications and gchat messages, because often, this work deserves the quiet and concentration of a museum or a gallery. Such is the case with wunderkind Elliott Sellers. We have been a fan of his work since we were turned on to the content he was contributing to for Sigur Ros guitarist Jonsi. Then he was tapped for a few other projects that were on our radar thanks to our network LA music scenesters and recently another stunning video flew our way a few months back.
'Once Again' was a test video that Sellers posted 2 months back and the beauty of its' composition immediately catapulted it across the web. It'll soon hit 100k views on Vimeo, which is quite a number for a camera test. In instances such as this, it serves as a solid of example of what kind of reach undeniably excellent work can have. Upon re-watching to write this article, I was once again struck by the beauty of the piece and reminded to carry its' inspiration with me on future projects- another sign of great filmmaking.
Bringing us to this week...'Shapes' is the latest offering from Sellers and it was created for DUBLAB, a non-profit devoted to the growth of positive music, arts and culture. Sounds right up Sellers' alley. The edit work alone on Shapes is worth repeated views, the Cinematography is finely crafted and the graphic treatment is also flawless, especially the final slate. Do we have another hit on our hands, I think we do with 13k views in 3 days and an add to Vimeo Staff Picks. This is the type of work that deserves funding from bigger production companies to push his work further. It's also the type of work that should be projected in a gallery, next to other pieces he has created. Of course, it is only a matter of time before that happens and Elliott Sellers is a household name. In the meantime, //ApK has become a phone and email acquaintance with this kind soul and we hope to work to be working with him in the near future, schedules permitting. In the meantime, check out his work and keep passing it around the web. We all deserve some captivating art in the middle of our boring days looking at computers.
