We at The Tempest are getting ready for our second annual global reading challenge! 

How can you participate? It’s all explained here. You need to nominate books you love or want to read in specific categories. In 10 days, we’ll publish the list of books and we’ll start reading! 

You don’t have to read all books and you can submit reviews in whatever format: social media posts, articles to be published on our website, videos. Just make sure to tag us @WeAreTheTempest and use the hashtag #TheTempestReadingChallenge.

Desi women are ignored by the makeup industry, and we're tired of it

It’s not enough to feature a dark skinned model to represent your brand and call it a day – you have to deliver the product.

Many makeup brands have promoted celebrities of color to model for their brand, yet their products don’t necessarily work for most colored women. It’s a major struggle to find a shade that matches your skin in an industry which mostly seems to cater to predominantly white women as a default.

The world’s racist travel laws won’t let me travel the way I want to

I was a Pakistani from the Third World which automatically and supposedly, turned me into a potential terrorist, perpetrator, economic migrant, threat etc.

I now live and work in London, but my passport still grants me visa free access to less than 30 countries and that too, under strict conditions. My wanderlust alter ego cannot plan spontaneous lunches in Paris and extended trips to Japan without going through the God awful process of bruising my passport with an inordinate surplus of visas.

‘Steven Universe’ is the queerest thing on TV, and I’m obsessed

Shows like “Rugrats,” “Hey Arnold!” and “Dexter’s Laboratory” entertained us for after-school playtime and weekend escapades. But it’s impossible to recall a single cartoon from my childhood and adolescence that speaks directly to personal identities or the exploration of who we are or could possibly become.

“Steven Universe” accomplishes this and its success is continuously celebrated by trans, non binary, and genderqueer people, especially of color. Social justice, with the additional artistic wing, is gradually becoming more intersectional from a queer and feminist eyesight.

The two worlds that make me whole are no longer safe

This year, both of my homelands let me down.

I’m talking about the extrajudicial killings in the Philippines, and the extrajudicial killings in the United States, although Americans don’t call them that.

I am half Filipina and half white resident of Texas, but to me the Philippines represents all my earliest memories: the foods that mean home, the language that means family, the relatives who give me their love. I often pass for white and cannot speak for those who experience the world differently because of the way they look.

This isn’t a story of personal dread. As one of those people whose heart belongs to more than one place, my story, and my horror, is its own.

No, Women’s March, that anti-choice organization on your list isn’t feminist

Though it may not be obvious from their name, New Wave Feminists are a danger to women’s rights because they specifically lobby and protest against choice. You can absolutely be against abortion personally and be a feminist, but you can NOT be against choice and wear that label.

Their Facebook page is filled with grateful posts from women who are trying to reconcile feminism and being pro-life, but this organization does not exist simply as a haven for feminists who have personal or religious problems with abortion. Instead, they seek to take the right to choose away from other women.
