In a few Asian countries I have been to, coffee beans digested in the stomachs of little mammals, then pooped out and cleaned to be ground into a Cup of Joe is a thing. In Indonesia it was Luwaks/Civets and in Vietnam it is Weasels. I have even seen “Squirrel Coffee” in the markets here. As an “en-poo-thiest,” I initially found this intriguing. Unfortunately there is a dark side to this tradition. Luwak Coffee is some of the most expensive coffee in world, but it comes at an even higher price to the animals that live in cages and are force-fed coffee beans, and often nothing else. If you are looking to purchase coffee from the feces of “wild” animals instead of captive, the beans will be even more expensive because it is harder work for the humans harvesting the poop. Alas you can’t always know for sure if a bag labeled “wild” was actually wild. I felt very conflicted about this practice while in Indonesia so I avoided it. When I was in Dalat, Vietnam I was unexpectedly brought to a coffee plantation by a Vietnamese man who was showing me around. Since I was there, I did try some of the poop coffee. It tasted like coffee. So… I don’t see the point. Beans do just fine without traveling through the intestines of unhappy animals. This shit certainly ain’t vegan, butt I guess you can’t weasel around the fact that it makes money. 😞💩
