This photo was taken at about 660mm and I could have taken this picture in a couple of ways. I could have 1) taken this photo natively at 400mm on my 100-400mm lens, and cropped to get this result, or 2) I could have used my 2x teleconverter on my 100-400mm to get to 660mm without cropping. . The difference? Using 2), my f-stop is limited to f/11 and above, which means I need to rely on my ISO to get the exposure I’m looking for yielding a little more grain in my image. . If I used method 1) I could have used a much lower ISO but resulting in a smaller resolution image. . Which method would you use? . This is how I know I’m getting old. . Yesterday morning’s temperature of about (feels like) -32C was probably one of the coldest mornings in recent memory. . I was prepared and bundled up real well. While I was happily taking photos I noticed another photographer enjoying the beautiful scene that unfolded in front of us. He was a young gun with apparently a much higher threshold for dealing with the cold. Wearing thin jogging pants (vs. My two layers of thick pants), a winter jacket that was unzipped at the front, no hat or scarf (vs. My parka, hood, scarf, and toque), and to my recollection he didn’t even have gloves or mittens on (vs my glove, mitten combo, plus hand warmers). . He ran around taking photos so he probably did feel a little cold, but that’s when I realized I can’t compete with the strength (or craziness) of the next generation of photographers these days. . In this photo a lone duck flies above Lake Ontario as the sun rises above the horizon. Thick lake fog hovers over the icy surface while a thicker layer of clouds in the back make for a true Canadian winter scene! . Nikon Z 9 with Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S at 400mm, 1/1000sec.
