Instantly Programming
In under two weeks, I'll be enveloped in an immersive program to learn software development. I've been looking for the right type of programming bootcamp for the past 7-8 months. Since then, I've taught myself as much as one can learn given that I work full-time and have very little time to learn otherwise. Little did I know that I would chose to attend General Assembly's WDI (Web Development Immersive) Program right here in my hometown, Santa Monica.
I put my two weeks in at my job as a graphic designer for a printing facility, and now just going through the prep work, which is supposed to take me around 50 or so hours to complete. So far so good! Plenty ahead of schedule and so excited to be surrounded by individuals in the same mindset. Gaining perspective on how to learn so intensely will be a real test and I can't wait to meet who I'll become in just three months.
Please feel free to message me, comment or email for any insight on this program... [email protected]
I read your recent "WDI Here I Come" post - congratulations! I noticed your bit on lack of sleep/commuting schedule/etc - if you really enjoy coding you'll have no trouble pulling through the long day hauls. I'm currently in the junior cohort of Hack Reactor. I thought I would get burnt on the long days - we're in class from 9:00 am - 8:00 pm (mandatory) - but I end up coming in at 8:00 AM and staying until 11 PM to do as much work as possible and I love it. Ask box is making me keep this short-

hi there!! and thank you!
i figure i’ll be OK with the schedule insanity, given it is only for 3 months. what’s 12 weeks, right? especially when hours fly by staring at code (as they always seem to do…)
how are you liking hack reactor? that’s such a phenomenal program. i wish they had a location in NYC.
and we plod slowly along...
Congratulations!
You have been chosen to participate in the final portion of the interview process for the Web Development Immersive beginning on August 26th.
The next step is for you to complete the following coding exercises which can be found here within the next 7 days.
Once you have submitted these exercises, an admissions representative will be in touch with respect to the dates and times of the final in person interview here at GA!
Best,
General Assembly
General Assembly Web Development Immersive; Week 1
In May of 2013, I received some awesome news. I was accepted into General Assembly's Web Development Immersive Program. For 12 weeks me and my other 20+ cohort members will be studying how to become an apprentice web developer. The things we are studying are; html5, css3, javascript (node, backbone, ember, handlebars etc), ruby, rails, best practices and many other skills, qualities and traits found in an Apprentice Software Engineer. This is my first post recapping my first week;
Monday:
Monday started as an intro for about 30 minutes, then we dove right into the nitty-gritty. We started by making a wire frame of what will be our first project; a resume site.
Tuesday:
We dove into CSS to style our pages. I was a little bit on the weaker side of things, so this was a great day to explore the inner depths of CSS.
Wednesday:
We started off Wednesday with Javascript. I was having a hard time understanding loops (loops & code blocks [ruby] are my weaknesses right now). I was having a harder time with it, and one of the instructors, Baxter, sat down with me for over an hour after class to go over them. I am still not 100%, but much better than before.
Thursday:
More Javascript! We changed rooms because the building we are at was hosting a huge event . There were people down the street waiting to get in. Felt like a boss going right in front of the line.
Because we were in a smaller room, it actually felt cozier. Everyone changed seats, and we all got to sit with, and talk to, people we hadn't really had the chance of meeting. We spent a fair amount of time going over jQuery as well.
Friday:
Still in the smaller, cozier, room, we finished up our wire frame project. We had access to json data, and got to set up a server. I spent most of the day going over my html page (will post link to github soon) and adding javascript to it so I could generate the json data right into any html page. Awesome day.
Weekend:
Because I have the best parents in the world, I am staying in Santa Monica even though I live in Orange County. So the weekend was pretty much hibernating and getting ready for the next week. Sleep is always good. I cannot wait for next week!
