T- 56 Days
I originally planned to have all the pre course work done by today, but that didnāt happen. There are a total of 8 pre course lessons and a final coding challenge, within each lesson there can be multiple exercises and in turn each exercise consist of multiple problems plus optional problems. I am not satisfied unless I solve them all. So about six days ago I was up to Lesson 6, having solved all the problems I was at the last optional one, and I just couldnāt figure it out.
How I felt. >.<
Hereās the problem:
// STRETCH PROBLEMS (NOT REQUIRED)
// count takes in an array
// and returns an objects containing a frequency count for each item in the array
// Example: count(['red', 'blue', 'blue', 'pink', 'blue', 'green', 'red']) would
// return { red: 2, blue: 3, pink: 1, green: 1}
I have a habit, bad one... need to work on it, of just starting to write code without properly planning it out. So, for six days, on and off, I attempted to solve this problem, with mild success, some parts would work others wouldnāt. I knew that it had to be solvable with just the material from the lessons so far, so I didnāt want to look up any additional resources. Finally I sat down with pen and paper and started to logically map it out. I didnāt get to far when it finally just clicked, and I started typing it out testing each part as I went along. Finally at the final step, I run it and it works! It does exactly what it needs to do! Iām so happy I figured it out. Looking at it now it wasnāt really that hard, I just need to think about it a little bit more before I just start typing as it comes to my head.
Hereās the solution I ended with. I sure thereās several different ways it could have been solved, but based on the lessons so far, this is how it made sense to me for it to work:Ā
Ā function count(array) {
Ā let sortArr = array.sort();
Ā let colorArr = [];
Ā let countArr = [];
Ā let count = 0;
Ā for(i = 0; i < array.length; i++){
Ā Ā if(sortArr[i+1] === sortArr[i]){
Ā Ā Ā continue;
Ā Ā }
Ā Ā else{
Ā Ā Ā colorArr[count] = sortArr[i];
Ā Ā Ā count++;
Ā Ā }
Ā }
Ā count = 0;
Ā for(i = 0; i < colorArr.length; i++){
Ā Ā for(j = 0; j < sortArr.length; j++){
Ā Ā Ā if(colorArr[i] === sortArr[j]){
Ā Ā Ā Ā count++;
Ā Ā Ā }
Ā Ā }
Ā Ā countArr[i] = count;
Ā Ā count = 0;
Ā }
Ā const colorFrequency = {};
Ā for(i = 0; i < colorArr.length; i++){
Ā Ā colorFrequency[colorArr[i]] = countArr[i];
Ā }
Ā return colorFrequency;
}
count(['red', 'blue', 'blue', 'pink', 'blue', 'green', 'red']);
Console Log:
{ blue: 3, green: 1, pink: 1, red: 2 }
Now Iām going to take a short break and let my brain reset.
There it goes, off to take a nap.Ā : )
59 days, and counting.
On July 16, 2018 I was accepted into the Lambda Schoolās Part Time Computer Science course, which will take a little over a year to complete. I decided that I want to keep a record of my experience through the program in the form of a blog. This wonāt be easy. The course is supposed to be pretty intensive, and Iāll be working full time as well. I decided to do this as an experiment to see how far I can push myself. I plan on studying extremely hard, and aim to be a top student. Iāll use this tumblr to keep track of everything Iām doing in the program, and so that anyone who is interested in it has an idea of how it works.Ā
The first day of class is on September 17th. Prior to that I need to accomplish the following:
Finish the pre course work ( I have a few exercises left and would like to have them complete by Sunday 22nd).
Work through additional resources provided by admissions ( there are five additional resources that were provided).
Start customizing my tumblr page ( I plan on creating my own theme, no pre made themes, this will get better as I go through the course).
Be as prepared as I can be before the first day of class!
I hope this āexperimentā turns out interesting, guess weāll see how it goes.

Get Used to Asking for What You Want subsequent to Coding School
On occasion, requesting what you need can threaten. It's not quite recently pertinent in meetings. It can feel pushy or hazardous to request the things you need. Individuals don't generally feel great pushing for themselves. This procedure rehashes itself at whatever time you apply for another occupation or take an advancement.
Numerous businesses won't simply volunteer the compensation and advantages you merit. You need to arrange and advocate for your benefit. Now and again, it'll be dependent upon you to proceed onward and investigate other profession openings. One of the greatest worries of numerous understudies moving on from coding school projects is that they'll request excessively. How might you get around this?
ā Research Market Trends: One of the most vital things you can do is research. Schools and educators can help you explore showcase patterns. While you can be forceful in your transactions, dependably ensure you're taking a gander at the correct numbers. On the off chance that the first or just circumstances you arrange is the point at which you're attempting to land a position or a raise, it can plague. ā Look for Outside Resources: Some organizations and sites offer assistance get ready for arrangements. They can help you do the exploration and experience diverse situations. They can offer tips on the best way to successfully arrange. For a few, this is only a method for imparting more certainty. For others, it gives key data that helps them say the correct things and fabricate achievement.
Know When to Accept or Walk Away with Coding School Programs
Regardless of the possibility that you don't need them, it's fundamental to realize what your options are subsequent to coding school. You can inquire about the market esteem so you comprehend what's reasonable for anticipate. By the day's end, a few bosses won't will to offer you that equitable esteem. When you comprehend what your alternatives are, you can show signs of improvement thought of when to leave or acknowledge. Pay isn't the main figure transactions. Now and then, businesses offer you more noteworthy advantages or progression openings. Some additionally appreciate more noteworthy development openings. Interviewing with Bloc Software Developer Program
I've been weighing the pros and cons of MANY different code bootcamps available in person here in Denver, or online. I've narrowed it down to Bloc, Fullstack, and Turing. As a mom I'm really leaning towards online, and need to decide if that path is right for me. If it is, which do I go with? The elite Fullstack, or the beginner friendly Bloc?
Do you have experience with code bootcamps, or becoming a developer without a CS degree? Give me your input!!
Day 14.
Two weeks since I started these daily reflections I feel closer to a plan. Iāve researched many of the top coding schools that are available to me online or in Denver where I live (FullStack, Turing, Bloc, Galvanize). There are pros and cons to all of them. I love the idea of an in person setting like Turing and it helps that it is also a nonprofit which makes me feel good. Ultimately, I have a 20 month old and a wife that works strange hours, without the flexibility to call out, or leave early.Ā
Could Online Code Schools Be The Answer?
Maybe. Iāve spoke a good amount to FullStack Academy, and have some calls and interviews with Bloc tomorrow. Here are the current pros/cons of each.
Full Stack Pros: credibility, online
Full Stack Cons: new online program, designed for intermediate devs and would require a bootcamp ($5k) or intensive learning on my own before being ready Bloc Pros: First online school started in 2011, starts at beginner base
Bloc Cons: not as strong reputation as Full Stack, 9 months vs 6 or 7
Other Things to Focus On
In the midst of this I want to ensure I donāt lose the focus on healthy living, including daily yoga and exercise practices. I believe daily journaling, yoga, and more regularly running for 30 minutes at a time can keep that healthy balance.
Looking forward to learning more about Bloc tomorrow!
