the city noise hums around them, distant sirens and the low rush of traffic far below the rooftop. wind tugs lightly at her hair, cool against her face. spiderman stands a few feet away, posture loose, one hand braced casually against the ledge like nothing in the world could bother him.

ahmya watches him in silence.

there is something off. not in the way he stands, not in the jokes he almost makes. deeper than that. something tucked behind the mask and the easy movements.

" that you hurt? "

she tilts her head slightly, studying him. her gaze does not focus on the surface. it sharpens, narrows, listening more than looking. the city noise fades for her, pushed aside as she isolates a different sound.

and so the smile only wavers, trembling at the corners before she forces it back into place. it lingers a second too long, stretched thin across her face. then she swallows and looks down, lashes lowering to hide the shine in her eyes. the room around her feels too wide, too quiet. even the air feels heavier, pressing against her ribs.

what a heavy feeling, this hollowness, this loneliness that she cannot figure out, she cannot understand. it sits in her chest like an empty room with no windows. she tries to name it, tries to shrink it into something small and manageable, but it only spreads. it is not dramatic. not loud. just there. constant.

her fingers curl slightly at her sides before she lifts both hands in a loose, careless shrug, like she is brushing something invisible away.

" i'm not- promise, "

she says it quickly, almost tripping over the words. her smile returns, but it does not suit her in this moment. it is too bright, too polished. it belongs to someone else, someone untouched. she nods once, as if to convince both of them.

there is a pause. the kind that stretches thin.

the question hangs between them. she lets out a small breath through her nose, half laugh, half deflection. her shoulders roll back, posture straightening as if confidence can be worn like a jacket. she glances away again, blinking once, steadying herself before she looks back up.

Artemis isn't a stranger to finding her teammates or friends attractive. She'd had such a crush on Icicle Jr. when they younger and had even dated him for a while. When she had first joined the Team, she had flirted with Superboy with no shame. Bette Kane had been the first person she had met at Gotham Academy along with the weirdo who randomly wanted a photo with her, and the girl was gorgeous. Kaldur is handsome, Wally is a dorky kind of hot, M'gann is pretty, and Zatanna is ethereal.

But the question of Spider-Man leaves her a little flushed. They had caught each other off-guard when unmasking their faces, him being surprised at how nonchalant she had been and her twice as shocked for him following suit. His face is almost burned into her brain now. Gloved carding his dark hair, hazel eyes that weren't sure where to look, flushed cheeks from accidentally insulting her and then calling her pretty (also by accident, but she's counting it).

Still, it's not like she knows the guy that well. So she shrugs nonchalantly and smirks as she normally would.

❝ Yeah, you're cute, ❞ Artemis replies. She's unabashed when it comes to flirting, and the smirk rises as she leans back in her chair. ❝ Why? Not expecting me to answer that? ❞
