I know there's more to this but I recommend reading the book Crucial Conversations. Totally changed my thinking on dealing with uncomfortable talks when you just want to agree & get it over with. Maybe it would help you too? It's honestly very good.
I might try it if I can get my hands on it! The weird/stupid thing though is that this is SO UNLIKE ME.
I'd planned the conversation thoroughly beforehand, and I was all anger and frustration. I changed personalities completely as soon as I was being stared down by a figure of authority--suddenly my little inner pilot in my brain is mashing keys going "nope nope aBORT ABORT be quiet be good mom is gonna be mad oh god oh god be quiet be good say your lines right or she'll just get angrier"
it's just. A really uncomfortable, unwelcome but in retrospect really obvious thing to realize about myself.
