Regrann from @webuyblack - On July 11th 1925 Mattiwilda Dobbs was born. She was an coloratura soprano opera singer, and one of the first black singers to enjoy a major international career in opera. She was the first Black singer to perform at La Scala in Italy, the first Black woman to receive a long-term performance contract at the Metropolitan Opera, New York and the first Black singer to play a lead role at the San Francisco Opera. Today we honor our sister for all of her accomplishments! #WeBuyBlackFacts - #blackhistoryisamericanhistory #mattiwildadobbs #opera #sorprano (at The Metropolitan Opera)

@Regrann from @idurrant - Regrann from @webuyblack - On this day in 1948 the supreme Court ruled in the landmark case Shelley v. Kraemer. The Kraemers were a white couple who owned a home in a Missouri neighborhood governed by a restrictive covenant. These covenants were private agreements that prevented blacks from owning property in the Kraemers' subdivision. The Shelleys were a Black couple who moved into the Kraemers neighborhood. The Kraemers went to court to enforce the restrictive covenant against the Shelleys. The supreme court ruled in favor of the Shelleys citing that although restrictive covenants were not unconstitutional, state enforcement of the covenant violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. State courts could not constitutionally prevent the sale of real property to Blacks even if that property is covered by a racially restrictive covenant. This case revolutionionized the sales of property in the United States. Follow us at @WeBuyBlack for more #WeBuyBlackFacts and shop with us on WeBuyBlack.com. - #regrann

Regrann from @webuyblack - On this day in 1841, the Supreme Court reached a ruling in the United States v. Amistad case. They found that the enslaved Africans who seized control of the ship had been illegally forced into slavery therefore they were free under American law. This case was so historic that there was even a movie made about it where Djimon Honusou played Joseph Cinqué who was the leader of the revolt. #WeBuyBlackFacts - #regrann
Credit to from @webuyblack - On March 2, 1955 fifteen-year-old #ClaudetteColvin became one of the first Black women to refuse to give up her seat on the bus in Montgomery, Alabama. This was before #RosaParks refused to give up her seat. Claudette was arrested and thrown in jail. Claudette was one of the four women to challenge #BusSegregation in court. Her story was used in Browser Vs. Gayle which was the landmark supreme court case that overturned bus segregation in the south. It later came out that Rosa Parks was chosen by the #NAACP and other Black organizations to be the face for the bus movement because Claudette was pregnant at the time, and that is why Rosa is credited as the iconic figure but the truth is Claudette Colvin and other women came first. #WeBuyBlackFacts - #regrann
