I am waiting SO patiently for the weck jar trend to end so I can buy a good set from the local thrift store for an affordable price and use them as intended (storing food) instead of the weird insistence on drinking out of them.

The Solstice gifts have arrived.
A few weeks ago I got my Christmas/Solstice present early. A check devoted to Weck canning jars. I blogged about it here. I have more Mason style jars than I know what to do with, 4 full rubbermaid totes for both quart and pint. Those are just what aren't in use right now. I still have the larder full of fruits, tomato products and dried things.
I wasn't sure what to get with this gift. Admittedly $225 for new Weck jars wouldn't buy me very many. The jar I got (the juice jar) retails brand new for over $15 per jar! Which means I could have purchased a whopping 14 jars with that $225. As one gal on a forum I was reading said, "I'd have to mortgage my house to be able to can solely with Weck jars."
Clearly eBay or bulk purchasing would be the way to go. Bulk purchasing wasn't an option for me because I don't belong to a canning group that can leverage for big purchases like that. So eBay it was for me! I managed to score 18 Weck 1/2 liter juice jars for $49! Still a steep price for canning jars, considering I could've purchased about 65 mason jars for that price! Ouch! But still this was a gift and I was bound to purchase Weck jars with it. Just on a side note, I was terrified to purchase glass from a private seller on eBay, but this is how they came. Extremely well packaged.
But after I scored the Weck juice jars I really didn't want anything else. So I asked the givers If they would allow me to scope out a Le Creuset pan. They agreed. I found 2. One I had to purchase new because I couldn't find it used or as happened a lot, the used price was more money than the new price. Discontinued colors being rare and all, but as for me, I don't have a "color". I have a rainbow! I refuse to purchase any one color. It makes my kitchen brighter and it's easier when I have kitchen help to say, "grab the lime green pan for me," instead of "grab the 10 inch saucier pan for me." Most kitchen help (husbands) would go cross eyed!
That brings my story up to the 2 new*ish pans I got with the leftover Weck jar money. One as I say was new. This green colored grill pan the color name is "spinach" (insert fancy pants joke here.) I did find a white grill pan on eBay, but the cost plus shipping was a little more than purchasing it new from *gasp* crate and barrel. This marking the first purchase from C&B for me EVER, and probably the last. Don't get me wrong I'm sure they are a fine company I just don't really purchase things they carry new. So it's weird for me. I digress.... here is the pan. Oh one more thing, it was free to give a gift note so I went ahead and gave myself one.
Then I scored on eBay this tiny little pan that really looks like someone who doesn't know cast iron used it. It's not rusted, but the pictures make it look a lot worse. All it really needs is a good scrubbing to get the baked on oils off of it. Then a good reseasoning. I don't think it was used much because the back is impeccable. I already have 2 regular cast iron pans of this size, so I plan to see what pans perform better and possibly get rid of one of them. We'll see.
Woot! Happy Kitchen Goddess! Now I must go and clean little lemon pan, and make her sparkly! Happy Solstice Everyone, or End of the World day if you want to go that far. :P
I HEART WECK.
JJ has become accustomed to my habits. One of them is that I like to soak the labels off jars then clean them up and use them again and again for storage, snacks, travel and friendly to-go containers for my friends.
MOMA store sells some great jar tops that make most any jar a useful kitchen and serving tool, but I have become so enamoured by the Weck Jars that I just might have to buy a few. They've been making them since 1900 and the design is just tops. I'm partial to the Tulip design, but they are all quite lovely.
Can you feel the seasonal canning coming on?
