I’m still mad that book clarie was so emotionless towards fergus
Hello Anon, are you in my brain because SAME.
I sound like a broken record when I say this but one of the best changes that the show has ever made was to the relationship between Claire x Fergus. The show gave them an actual believable and heartwarming relationship. The book’s relationship between Claire and Fergus was tangential at best and nonexistent at worst.
There’s no conceivable way that Book!Jamie could have taken in a young boy without Claire developing maternal love for him as well. No matter what reason Jamie took Fergus in for, or under what circumstances, there’s no way they’d both only consider him as someone under their employ.
Compare this passage from Dragonfly in Amber when they first return to Lallybroch after being in France:
“You mentioned Fergus,” Jenny said, as we talked, “Who’s that?”
“Oh, Fergus? He’s— well, he’s—” I hesitated, not sure quite how to describe Fergus. A pickpocket’s prospects for employment on a farm seemed limited. “He’s Jamie’s,” I said at last.
to this heartbreaking scene in “Dragonfly in Amber” (2x13):
The show managed to turn their relationship into a mutual love and actually develop Wee Fergus into a character that we care about beyond the single fact that he was a pickpocket who became Germain’s father, which I felt the book never quite accomplished (despite how much I also love Not So Wee Book!Fergus). HUGE bonus points to the show for casting someone who looks so much like Claire. The similarities in their looks and their childhoods (both without parents from a young age with a very unusual upbringing) was definitely subtle, but definitely appreciated.
I just love these two together and really hope we get some great heart-to-heart moments between Claire x Fergus (more so than Claire x Marsali as the show’s been leaning toward) in the coming seasons.
Thanks for dropping by, Anon!
