When fansubbers went pro, we brought our software with us. That’s part of why companies decided to hire fansubbers instead of just hit them with C&Ds: they were already trained and equipped.

The good one when I went pro was AegiSub, to the point that I used it for fansubs, did my sample on it during the hiring process, and did all my pro subbing work on it. I’m out of localization and into journalism but I do know it’s still used at least somewhat.

Anyway, what I’m getting to is that the file extension for AegiSub files is .ass and that still hasn’t gotten old.
