Some notes:

I was mulling over how to translate カメラマン (cameraman) since it's quite an ambiguous word in Japanese. I went with cinematographer in the synopsis, but I think videographer makes more sense in the context of corporate PVs and CMs. I think it's a good word to describe someone who's responsible for everything when it comes to low-scale productions.

What Naomitsu doesn't like is 粒あん (tsubuan, or written 粒餡), a type of anko (sweet red bean paste). But tsubuan is a coarse variant with chunks of beans together with sugar (optional). You even avoid breaking the skins as much as possible.

Souta's favorite foods are shingen mochi and karaage.

Karaage - a cooking method of deep-frying food (usually chicken, other meat, fish, seafood, etc.)

shingen mochi (信玄餅) - traditional wagashi from Yamanashi Prefecture, a type of rice cake eaten with dark sugar syrup, associated with Kinseiken (a famous confectionery producer) and named after the warlord Takeda Shingen

I come bearing all the sources I can find on English subs for The Spirealm, the live-action adaptation of the danmei novel Kaleidoscope of Death because I need more people to freak out with me over this. A lot of people (me included) have been suffering through the sometimes-unintelligible MTL subs on dramacool, but now that some time has passed, some wonderful people out there have done some amazing fansubs and I thought I'd share some links that @naughtynanzhu and I have found.

This google drive contains all 78 episodes, 23 of which have English subtitles (as of 3/21/2024). New episodes are being added but slowly. Video quality up to 1080p. (Note: there are some cute English subbed bts videos at the bottom!) Credit to twitter users @mwsdrama and @xianguang0104 who I believe are the fans behind these fansubs. NOTE (Apr. 2024): This google drive now seems to have restricted access - see note at end of bullet three below

This google drive contains all 78 episodes, all of which have English subtitles. However the English subtitles overlap a little bit with the Chinese ones so it can be a little bit hard to read. Video quality up to 720p. NOTE (Apr. 2024): This google drive now also seems to have restricted access and may not work.

This google drive has all 78 episodes of English subtitles in the form of srt files. You can download them and play the video in your choice of player that allows you to load in srt files (VLC, KMPlayer, etc.). NOTE (Apr. 2024): There is a link at the top to the raw video files ("78 episodes Raw Files 1080") which you can use to access the video files that were originally available in the google drive above that is now restricted.

Retro_fiction on bilibili has English subtitles, but a VPN may be required depending on where you are. NOTE (Apr. 2024): Looks like these have been taken down as well

I can't vouch for the quality of the subtitles for all 78 episodes across all three links, but I scanned through a few episodes in each drive and they're all quite good as far as I can tell, and definitely a million times better than the MTL ones.

Personally, I would download the video files from the first link and the srt files from the third and play them in KMPlayer together for the video quality and lack of overlapping subtitles.

22-64: Who's At Fault for the Rain?

The masked ninja had a demand note for a soy milk payment. He insisted it wasn’t him who bought it. However, the person who placed the order is unknown. Meanwhile at Urayama, Tachibana-senpai is engaged in a fight with a suspicious man.

finally went ahead and got this wrapped up. this is the second half to an arc that is an adaptation of the last chapter of volume 52 of the manga, along with the stolen signboard arc immediately preceding it (that also happens to feature the Dokusasako ninjas iirc!). gingin! every episode where tomesaburou and monjirou have petty arguments is a good episode.

it's been a while since I've revisited subbing, so if there's any major inconsistencies between phrasing and format here and my previous work, feel free to reach out and let me know.

extra notes under the cut!

my knowledge on terms used mostly within the context of the show's time period and related to ninjas is a little rusty (see comment about subbing), but I tried my best. if any history nerds want to chime in and correct me, sound off in the comments below haha

the name of senzou's weapon: Bomb was easier to conceptualize visually for a general audience than fire arrow, but I added an extra note up top in case someone comes across the latter term so it isn't immediately unfamiliar. both the official nhk episode index and amako soubei's book on ninja equipment use 宝禄火矢 (hourokuhiya) as the spelling in kanji, so I went with that for the translator's notes.

zanchi saga 1 (background): perfunctory research refers to zanchi as spies left to infiltrate enemy territories for extended periods of time to establish relationships with the local population and gather intel, though it mostly seems to be in a modern context (notably, Onoda Hiroo who actually fits Senzou's description of a zanchi pretty well). i'm not sure if its usage and meaning differs in a muromachi period context or not, though. history nerds! sound off in the comments!

zanchi saga 2 (the puns): Wordplay hurts... For the sake of the lunch/zanchi pun, since it's explained in the show, zanchi was left in its romanized form. Rantarou's mispronounciation was a lot more of a headache. I tried my best, viewer, I really did.

Casino Royale subs

I subbed Casino Royale, and I'd like to think I did a better job than the official livestream subs. This is not a subtle script - Koike is certainly no Masatsuka. It was relatively fast and easy for me to translate but I'm honestly not sure it's better with subs. The dialogue is mainly for infodumping (plus jokes) and the same basic plot points are repeated over and over. I don't know why they keep giving Koike these two-acts! An exercise in economical writing would be good for him. He's had some luck with really strong source material such as Elisabeth, Casablanca and Great Gatsby. Of his original works, Seal of Roses is the best, and certainly not for the subtle plot. Casino Royale is like that - a fun, swashbuckling adventure showing off Yurika in sharp suits instead of Rika in velvet and high boots. Besides general Yurika swagger the highlights are the cool dances and fight scenes. Throwing Romanovs, student revolts, a mad Nazi scientist and a bunch of taidan-worthy references to other Yurika shows into it seems to be in the spirit of the Bond universe so why not. They missed the opportunity to give a more interesting role as Vesper to Kano, but that would have been a very different and sadder taidan show. The dolphin love is too much but I guess we're free to interpret it as just Bond's cheesy pickup lines riffing on Delphine's name. To be fair it might count as the zuka equivalent of giving Bond girls corny pornstar names.
