All of the bags were packed in the car and Olivia had just pulled the keys from her back pocket when Amanda approached her. She was wearing a pair of dark jean shorts and a loose blank tank top that had one strap falling off her shoulder showing her black sports bra underneath. She felt her cheeks flush at the sight so Olivia turned away hoping that she wouldn’t notice. When she composed herself she turned back towards the blonde woman.
“Where is Ella?”
Amanda looked up from her phone pulling the strap of her tank top up, “Last I saw she was down by the lake.”
Olivia grinned, “You thinking what I am thinking?”
“You got a spare set of clothes for her?”
Olivia nodded and then hurried down the path to the lake. The woman watched as Ella splashed her toes in the water humming along to the music that was playing from the phone that lay beside her hip. With a battle cry, Olivia and Amanda rushed towards Ella. They lifted her up in their arms and in one swift motion tossed her into the lake. Ella let out a large yell as the cold water surrounded her. Olivia and Amanda curled over in laughter, Olivia falling slightly into Amanda’s arms. She smiled even more as she felt Amanda’s arms wrap securely around her.
When Ella broke the surface of the lake’s water she pushed back her hair and glared at the woman, “We have a fifteen-hour drive home and the two of you goofs decided to throw me into a lake? Are you SERIOUS!”
“Oh come on Ella Bella. You have been pulling pranks on us this whole week,” Amanda smiled, “Plus your Momma has some spare clothes that you can change into.”
Ella sighed swimming over to the deck, “Can you at least help me get out of the water?”
Before Olivia could protest Amanda was leaning down to help Ella. However, as soon as Ella’s hands wrapped around Amanda’s she pulled her into the water. Amanda flipped over flopping into the water with a laugh.
When Amanda came up for air she had a huge smile spread across her face. Olivia merely shook her head, “Well I will now get some clothes for Amanda to drive in. You hooligans can figure out how to get yourselves out.”
Olivia walked back to the car searching through her bag to pull clothes out for Amanda. The blonde’s bag was buried at the bottom but Olivia figured she would have something that would fit her. Once she had the clothes ready she walked back to the deck where Ella and Amanda were sprawled out laughing loudly while drying in the sun. She dropped the clothes behind them.
“I grabbed some of my clothes for you to use Amanda. Now get dressed you two. I want to be on the road in fifteen minutes. I will be waiting in the car before you both get any smart ideas about pranking me.”
Olivia waited in the car queuing up the road trip playlist that Ella had created for them on the way home. Ten minutes later Ella was throwing herself along the back seat onto the pillow and blanket that Olivia had laid out for her. Olivia smiled as Ella pulled the blanket around her and let out a large sigh. Shortly after Ella was settled Amanda was sliding into the passenger seat. There was a stall in Olivia’s breath as she saw the shirt she had given Amanda was see-through and left nothing to the imagination.
Amanda smiled at Olivia as she started the car, “Thanks for letting me borrow the clothes Liv. They are comfy.”
Olivia shrugged, “Just don’t plan on keeping it because that is my favorite shirt.”
“Noted,” Amanda said and then rummaged through the bag at her feet, “Snacks anyone?”
Ella threw her hand up immediately asking for Twizzlers. Amanda supplied her request and then handed Olivia a snickers bar knowing they were her favorite. Olivia smiled undoing the wrapper as she pulled out of the driveway. Ella sang along to the music flowing from the speakers for a while. Olivia hummed along casually more intently listening to the way that Ella’s voice filled the car. She loved the way that her daughter sang. After a while snores filled the car instead as Ella drifted off to sleep.
“Hey Liv,” Amanda said, breaking the silence between them.
“Yeah?” Olivia responded looking over at the woman.
“Thanks again for letting me tag along with y’all. It was the best vacation I have been on in a very long time... Well, I think ever. I never really got to take a lot of family vacations growing up.”
A small tear started to form in Amanda’s eye. Olivia noticed and reached for her hand taking it gently, “You are welcoming anytime Amanda. You are part of our family.”
Amanda smiled at this, running her thumb gently over Olivia’s fingers. Olivia waited for the moment Amanda pulled her hand away but it never came. For the next couple hours of the trip, they kept their hands locked together.
It’s that time of year again. When life gets unusually busy for me and I just get exhausted. So–this year, I’m going to do a week of “Best Of But So What” based on which five fiction posts got the most views throughout the year. They might be cleaned up a little, removing any typos from the original posts, edited if I find a phrasing could be made better–but mostly just the same story. Enjoy this…
