This is kinda cool, and it's nice to see a Florida attraction that somehow survived the encroachment of Disney in their territory. May have to remember this if I ever visit Florida.

Also if there are videos of these mermaids, it'll make a nice reference for my writing!

There is only one thing I desire more than becoming a mermaid: becoming a mermaid of Weeki Watchee Springs.

The place has everything I love:

costumes that somehow evoke both cartoon characters and showgirls

flashy makeup

batty old ladies who collect fairy tale memorabilia

synchronized swimming

manatees

giant seahorse statues you can sit on

small-town, working-class girls living their dreams

female friendship

Americana

public (semi-)nudity

ever since listening to the "stuff mom never told you" podcast about mermaids, i've been dying to go to weeki watchee springs and see the live mermaids. add it to my long list of "stuff to visit on my imaginary epic road trip".
