Adapted from the ever-fabulous Ina Garten's recipe.
1/2 lb sweet Italian sausage
1 can San Marzano tomatoes or fresh tomatoes, seeded and diced
1/2 cup half and half or heavy cream
1 package high fiber or whole wheat pasta (spaghetti or penne)
Add ground turkey and sausage to hot skillet and cook until all the pink color is gone and meat starts to brown.
Add onions, garlic, oregano and red pepper flakes. Stir into meat and cook for another 2 minutes.
Add red wine to skillet to "deglaze". Scrape the bottom of the pan and stir everything together. Cook until most of the liquid has evaporated off.
Add tomatoes and tomato paste. Stir everything together and let simmer for 15 minutes. It should look like a nice tomato sauce now (If using fresh tomatoes, let simmer for an extra 10 minutes).
While the sauce is simmering, bring pasta water to a boil and add a generous amount of salt. Cook pasta 1 minute less than "al dente".
To finish the Bologense, stir in cream and cook for another 2 minutes. Transfer sauce to new pot or Tupperware for storage.
Drain pasta, saving 1/4 cup of pasta water. Combine pasta water, pasta and 2 cups of Bolognese sauce to skillet and cook on medium heat for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
Serve in bowls, with a generous amount of fresh Parmesan cheese and basil sprinkled on top.
Enjoy with a big glass of red wine and your favorite salad!
