Profound statement by ʿUmar ibn Al-Khattāb, exhibiting the metaphorical nearness of God and His manifestations in creation. The one who is aware recognizes the signs of God in all of creation, remembering Him at all times. For instance, when a tree is seen, it is recognized that it is God that allowed it to grow and that its beauty is from God. To see God in all things is the way of the people of remembrance. This verse of the Qur'an puts forth four different attributes of God: • God is the First, in that there was nothing before Him. He is the uncaused cause of all created things. • God is the Last, in that He will continue to exist even after everything else perishes. • God is the manifest in that the manifestations of His wisdom and His power are visible in every particle of His creation. • God is at the same time the non-manifest, in that His essence is hidden due to Him being beyond the perception of His creation.
