In regards to this, Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah states, "The firasah is a light which God deposits in the heart of His servant. By this light, His servant distinguishes between truth and falsehood and between right and wrong." The Path of Sufism begins with acknowledging the presence of the ego. The self should be forgotten, as all things are to be done for God and not for the self. The only One who is truly worthy of saying "I" is God, as His existence is independent and hence different from His creation. This verse of the Qur'an puts forth four different attributes of God: • God is the First, in that there was nothing before Him. He is the uncaused cause of all created things. • God is the Last, in that He will continue to exist even after everything else perishes. • God is the manifest in that the manifestations of His wisdom and His power are visible in every particle of His creation. • God is at the same time the non-manifest, in that His essence is hidden due to Him being beyond the perception of His creation. Profound statement by ʿUmar ibn Al-Khattāb, exhibiting the metaphorical nearness of God and His manifestations in creation. The one who is aware recognizes the signs of God in all of creation, remembering Him at all times. For instance, when a tree is seen, it is recognized that it is God that allowed it to grow and that its beauty is from God. To see God in all things is the way of the people of remembrance. One must pursue knowledge of Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) while at the same time trying to purify their soul through the science of Sufism (Islamic Spirituality). If only law is learned then the heart will become hard, and if only spirituality is practiced then the person may end up in unlawful innovation or disbelief. As Imam Malik says, a person should combine both sciences in order to be of the successful.
