top five fan fics from any one fandom

oh GOSH let’s just count the greater MCU as one fandom eh, and in no particular order (also not counting any of my wife’s fics because I’m genuinely a fan of hers besides being like, gay and married to her but just listing off five of her fics would be cheating SO) (if you guys REALLY WANT I can do a separate top 5 of her fics but that seems excessive lmao)

I’ll Be the Rock Star if You’ll Be the Scientist by nerdwegian - T, Daisy/Jemma, 10k. This is like, classic Skimmons fic hiding in a shenanigans plot where a genetically modified dinosaur escapes the Bus in Lola, and everybody has to go retrieve It. It honestly reads like an episode to me and makes me laugh every time. (It also features background Clint/Coulson, which should tell you how much I love this fic because that doesn’t even bother me.)

Carry Me ‘Til You Marry Me by circ_bamboo - E, Melinda/Bobbi, 13k. This is fake marrieds fic where the gang accidentally runs into an alien ship and ends up spending some time in their civilization, and Bobbi and Melinda are mistaken for girlfriends and the aliens insist on marrying them. I love the worldbuilding in this fic, and the voices are pitch perfect.

Parfit Gentil by toffeecape - E, Pepper/Natasha, 2k. This is...I mean, some of it is porn but some of it is non-sexual service kink which is. a thing. for. me. ANYWAY. It’s just a gorgeous little snapshot of Natasha-as-Pepper’s-assistant and also ace-spectrum Nat, which I love dearly.

To Keep My Wolves From Your Door by pirateygoodness - E, Bobbi/Jemma, 41k. J is my friend but honestly I would adore this even if she wasn’t, because really good werewolf stories are my JAM. I really love the worldbuilding in this one too, and I’m also from the general area the story is set in and that gives me warm fuzzies.

the actual half of myself by cosmicocean - T, Matt/Foggy, 10k. C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!!! This is a soulmate AU, which is normally a trope that I avoid like the plague, but this one a) does something interesting with the soulmarks and isn’t the same old “first words you say to them” standby, and b) actually acknowledges that someone’s soulmate might change with time. Matt/Foggy is like the only white boyslash that I will be into pretty much 100% of the time without question, and I really love the stuff this fic does with them. (Also in this story Foggy has adorable moms and I love them.)

Anne Hathaway, again, since I was 12 years old and probably for the rest of my life. When I saw The Princess Diaries I thought she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen and when I saw The Princess Diaries 2 I flew into a jealous rage because Chris Pine got to kiss her and I did not. I have never forgiven Chris Pine for this. I made it through all of Les Miserables stubbornly dry-eyed until she returned at the end and then I wept profusely.

Anna Paquin, more specifically Rogue from X-Men and X2. I thought I wanted to BE Rogue, and I sort of did, but I also wanted to make out with her real bad. (And Anna’s still awesome and super ripped now so I feel great about teen!me’s taste, to be honest.)

Ellen Page, also from the X-Men movies, continuing the streak of my gaydar being either spot-on or only off by a little.* She’s my height buddy and I’m so glad she’s happy and gay now.

Kristen Stewart counts because I saw her in Catch That Kid when I was 10 and I distinctly remember having enormous hearteyes for her, lol

Brie Larson actually for like, five minutes because she was in this hilaribad kids’ movie called Hoot and she played...I mean, just a babydyke really. I watched this again recently and wow is it not good at all but baby me sure thought she was pretty!

Honorable mention to Aly Michalka who did not turn out gay but did turn out to still be making pretty good pop music, after all this time

Random headcanon

Why I started shipping themI mean. have you seen Eliza Dushku and Summer Glau interact. have you ever seen Eliza Dushku interact with a woman. But seriously, so I started watching Dollhouse just because Summer was in it, and the character of Bennett grabbed me immediately. It is probably bad how much I can relate to her, in a way. From her POV, Caroline was this beautiful interesting whirlwind of a girl who saw how weird Bennett was, and she loved that about her. She supported Bennett and helped her, and in return, Bennett was prepared to do almost anything for her. And then, after Caroline abandoned her (even though it was for her own good!! even though Caroline was trying to protect her!!), Bennett was so angry and hurt that she basically didn’t trust anybody ever again. It is so tragic and 100000% up my alley. I can trace at least part of like 90% of my current ships and their dynamics back to this one ship.

An au I want to seeI had an elaborate plan sketched out for a Dollhouse murder mystery AU where they were cop partners who were going to solve the murder of a famous show jumper. I have no idea where that notebook went and I don’t think anyone would care even if I tried, but I couldn’t resist my girls plus horses lol.

How do they get together?I always figured that a couple months into their being roommates they were just hanging out, and Caroline says something kind of casual and flirty and Bennett is like O_O and stammers out a response and Caroline is like “hey what would you do if I kissed you?” and Bennett was like asdfjdfisghgsd and Caroline was like “is that a yes, Benny?” and Bennett is like !!!!! and then they kissed lol.

Who has the tackiest fashion sense?My wife very conveniently made a blog post years ago that answers this very well. College!Bennett is even worse at dressing herself than me.

Who hogs the blanket?Caroline, because she flops around like a fish when she sleeps. Bennett wakes up if she gets too cold and makes Caroline give the blanket back. (I think probably eventually they have to just have separate blankets lol.)

Who come up with cheesy pickup lines/puns?I wrote this lol

Who (tries to) cook?Bennett can operate the microwave and that’s the extent of her cooking. Caroline likes to try to make fancy food with like, organic and all-natural ingredients, and Bennett will at least try a bite even if she hates it.

Who blushes furiously when  the other says sappy shit?Anytime Caroline says anything remotely nice about her Bennett turns fun shades of red! It’s very cute and Caroline does it on purpose, obviously.

Nicknames/pet names?Canonically, Caroline has called her Benny and Bennster. I assume it just goes like that with whatever nonsense syllables pop into her head.

How often/how do they say “I love you”?I don’t think it comes naturally to Bennett at all - like I just don’t think her parents were particularly demonstrative with their affection. So it like doesn’t occur to her as a thing you should do? And Caroline wouldn’t be terribly inclined to say it a lot with most people, but she can kinda tell that Bennett maybe needs to hear it more, so she just starts saying it out of habit. I think it’s more often an actions thing for them, though, like Caroline leaving food for Bennett when she’s too focused on work to eat or Bennett finding Caroline interesting articles online.

What do they fight about?Bennett is really passive-aggressive, so if something is bothering her she won’t say anything, she’ll just get really avoidant and quiet, and then Caroline tries to coax it out of her she gets more withdrawn. Probably stuff like Caroline flirting with somebody else (Caroline is just kind of generally flirty I think) or if Bennett’s on edge because of work stuff. I do think that Bennett is really anxious about pleasing Caroline and therefore not inclined to bring up stuff that’s bothering her because she’s terrified she’ll upset her.

Who’s more of a cat person?I don’t think either of them particularly like cats (as we know, Bennett likes pigs and I suspect Caroline’s a dog person) but they’ll show each other the occasional cute cat photo.

Who makes innuendos to make the other blush?Definitely Caroline. Bennett gets innuendo but she’s no good at doing it intentionally.

Who does the romantic gestures like flowers or chocolate?Their approach to romance is really unorthodox, so like, Caroline will leave post-it notes hidden around Bennett’s workspace with cute messages on them and Bennett will go with Caroline to marches and stuff even though they’re loud and overwhelming for her. If she does get Caroline chocolate, she makes sure it’s fair trade and preferably benefits some sort of social good. One time Caroline made a “bouquet” of cutouts of Sonic Screwdrivers for Valentine’s Day. It’s weird, but it works for them.

P: Are you what George R. R. Martin would call an “architect” or a “gardener”? (How much do you plan in advance, versus letting the story unfold as you go?)

Hmm. You know, I used to be entirely a gardiner, and over the past year or so i’ve begun planning a lot more. I’d say I’m somewhere in the middle; I definitely try to have things planned to an extent for longer fics, just so that I always know where I’m going, but I also come up with a lot of details on the fly.

My writing does really rely on repetition, though, so a certain amount of planning is needed.

I spent my entire week reading my way through your 100 Ways to Say I Love You (as well as some of your other fics) and I am so blessed that we live in the same time and frequent the same sites. My heart hurts so much, but in such a good way.
