Common Name: Cuming Crown Cactus
Origin: Bolivia and Argentina
Identification: Weingartia neocumingii is a small usually solitary cactus that has a globular stem that grows to around 20 cm in height and diameter. It has short tuberculate stems growing in ribs around the stem. Its spines are robust and are white with brown tips, about 1-3 cm long and grow in clusters of 7-35 in each areole. The funnel-shaped flowers can grow from anywhere on the cactus and are usually bright yellow to golden in colour and about 2 cm in diameter.
Information: The W. neocumingii grows in the Andes mountains in Bolivia and Argentina at high altitudes. It is a cactus belonging to the family of Cactaceae. It produces attractive flowers in the summer.
Growing Tips: The W. neocumingii should be grown in full sun (near a window). It prefers well-draining sandy or loamy soil. During the growing season it requires moderate watering and occasional fertilising, letting the soil dry out in between waterings. During the winter it should be kept completely dry. It can be propagated by offsets, preferably in spring or summer.
