With a name like Pachangacha, calling an album anything other than WEIRDHEAD would be strange. However, don’t psych yourself up for a record that’s overly eccentric. Instead, you’ll find a group of polished musicians that just like to have fun. While the tone of WEIRDHEAD could almost be described as childish, the groove, understated softness of some of the tracks, and influences that shine through will surprise you.

WEIRDHEAD appropriately jumps right into “The Fucking Beginning” with a track that is simultaneously gritty, grungy, and poppy. This is the prevailing tone of the music: in your face, almost that of a garage band that’s fun to listen to. However, “The Fucking Beginning” and its follow-up track “Amphetamine” trick you into thinking you’re in for an album full of noisy, disjointed, and unpolished songs that were perhaps more fitting for a first demo than a 14 track album. Stick around and you’re in for a treat. Fans of Brand New’s album Your Favorite Weapon may especially dig this track.

“Balls” opens slowly with softer and high-pitched “oohs” and “aahs” atop a beat much harder than you would expect for such harmonizing, but this is an album called WEIRDHEAD we’re talking about here.  The vocals on this track are surprisingly high and dare I say, almost, pretty? Despite the immature title, lyrics border on sickly sweet, ‘you taste better than a peanut butter cup,’ but just raunchy enough: ‘I like your shirt, I like your skirt. Do you know what I mean? Do you know what I mean? Can we take them off?’

What I’m about to say next surprised even myself, so I won’t mind if you gasp or furrow your brows in disgust and/or wonder. In the song “Boobies,” I started to hear hints of old Days Away. Rather than the grungy garage-band sound I had been hearing, the vocals give way to a softer and more vulnerable sound à la (former Days Away and current Good Old War) singer Keith Goodwin, only less refined.

“Underneath Girl” is the immediate standout of WEIRDHEAD with its Bygones-esque style and droning vocals. Perhaps that’s why the album’s Bandcamp page starts with this track, number nine, rather than the introduction. Again I hear slight hints of Goodwin’s style as subtly as I hear the influence of Brand New’s Jesse Lacey in tracks like “The Fucking Beginning.” While they croon ‘she’ll let you down, she’ll let you down without making a sound,’ the versatility of this track definitely won’t, as there is a seamless blend of loud guitars and soft melodies, culminating in a very energetic breakdown of sorts.

“Confused” has me singing along so frequently that I often hope my neighbors are at work. As the song plays, I find myself belting out: ‘I’m really confused a lot. And if you never want to talk to me, I would understand completely’ and I hope my neighbors are all at work. This track is an easy favorite with its catchy melody and lyrics we can all probably relate to. The guitars quiet down yet keep their edgy sound to create a different atmosphere for this song, adding to its more immediate likability.

“Gunk” also shows a rare vulnerability about Pachangacha, despite the somewhat childish lyrical content: ‘I’m gonna take a dump on every grade I ever got, flush it down the toilet... hope mom doesn’t find it.’ If you were skeptical about the Days Away or Brand New references, check out the verses on this song. Don’t worry... when I say “quiet” or “vulnerable”  I don’t mean it’s lacking any intensity or edginess. Gang vocals at the end of this track make it stick in your head, whether you want a mental image of the members of Pachangacha taking a dump all day or not. Thanks, guys.

“Weekend” is a fast-paced and grungy track intended to make you move. The high-pitched voice we were introduced to in “Amphetamine” makes another appearance. This song gets you psyched up to party on the weekend only to realize that apparently it’s only Wednesday. Is anybody here a fan of the show Workaholics? These guys probably are, but that’s just a guess. Fans of Regular Show will probably also appreciate this song. ‘Oh shit it’s only Wednesday. I was all ready to party.’

The slowest and by far prettiest song on the album is called “Nervous” - and I have to wonder why. Nothing about WEIRDHEAD is nervous and there is especially nothing to fear in releasing this track to the public.  My favorite part of “Nervous” is the obvious show of control in Pachangacha’s musicianship; they immediately transition (quite beautifully) from slow and melodic, almost lullaby-like lines such as ‘Because we understand the terms and we agree / I won’t get all touchy-feely. / Do you have a floor? Do you have a ceiling? / That nervous, that nervous excited feeling. / Go to sleep / Go to sleep and forget. / Go to sleep and forget’ to a raucous ‘I’ve never been too good at anything; I’ve never been too good at using my brain’ and right back again. The lyrics are surprisingly sophisticated and hit home a bit too much for someone who was just singing about poop. Seriously, it’s kind of freaky. I’d like to see this side of Pachangacha more often, though.

WEIRDHEAD literally comes to “The Fucking End” with a bang as gang vocals yell, ‘someone take us to the fucking end ... of what your life should have been.... This is the fucking end. THIS IS THE FUCKING END.’

My Favorite Rock Group, Pachangacha

Pachangacha knows what rock is all about: boobs, balls, and poop. Masturbating in gas station restrooms, disappointing your parents, and being that bearded hobo who freaks out all the girls at a college house party. Destroying any chance of real employment by covering your body with tattoos, fighting with your bandmates, and never sleeping. I've followed this band since 2011. I think their first release Berserkabunga is the greatest rock EP by that title ever created. I first saw them play for a small crowd in a small Southern town. They were loud and juvenile, probably too immature to be on tour by themselves. However I'm glad they came because that redneck town needed Pachangacha. When they finished their set I could tell they were pissed at each other about something silly. When I approached the merch table, they quickly stopped arguing and pretended like everything was cool. I knew this band was special. But do they have what it takes to carry on the torch of rock after KISS is gone? 

I needed to gather more evidence to be sure they were up to the task. I saw them in 2013, a few months before Weirdhead dropped. I worried that, with the time lapse, the band would grow up and alter their style. But Pachangacha stayed true. In fact, Weirdhead takes the genre of rock to the next level. Every track is like a check on the checklist of requirements to fill KISS' boots. While their debut EP mainly focuses on college, Weirdhead addresses other important topics like prescription drug abuse, the weekend, and taking a dump on your school assignment and flushing it down the toilet so mom doesn't find it. Pachangacha manages to take these mundane aspect of life and make them into the most epic songs.    

Somebody has to keep tabs on these boys and make sure they never realize how fucking moronic their band truly is. So I follow them closely, lurking in the shadows of basements and college parties, protecting them from cyber bullying and debilitating hangovers. They must keep going. The fate of cheese rock depends on it. This is my gift; this is my curse.  

Pachangacha is the best rock band ever. Weirdhead is out now on Major Bear Records and Berserkabunga is probably sold out but you should check out Sex Cave Records anyways.
