FDA Proposes Plan Requiring Food Manufacturers To Label Refined Sugars
As of July 2015, the FDA has initiated preemptive plans to create new food labeling stipulations requiring food manufacturers to label the amount of added sugars present in their products.
The suggested requirements would obligate manufacturers to declare the percent Daily Value of supplemental refined sugars added to their products in the Nutrition Facts labeling section of products’ packaging. The percent daily value indicates how much a nutrient in a serving of food contributes to one’s daily diet based on a 2,000 calorie/day diet. According to the FDA, “added sugars should not exceed 10% of your total calorie intake.” As of now, the average American gets 16% of their total calories from added sugars alone.
In order to provide Americans with the information they need to make more informed decisions on what they are putting in their bodies, the FDA is launching a plan to require companies to insert an “added sugars” section on all their product’s nutritional information.
Since refined sugars provide no nutritional value to our bodies, they are often labeled as sources of “empty calories”. Conversely, naturally occurring sugars present in milk, fruit, and honey, for example, provide our bodies with many crucially important vitamins, minerals, and nutrients our bodies need in order to function properly.
With the advent of recent health food initiatives, the FDA is making a concerted effort to make it easier for Americans to monitor the levels of unnatural, refined sugars they’re putting into their bodies.
Since Wella Bar believes in “making food better”, each Wella Bar is sweetened to perfection with all natural, organic wildflower honey, and contains zero refined sugars. For a healthier outlook on food, help us spread the Wella standard of freshness, and sweeten life up with some natural sugar!
