Heart-Healthy Benefits Of Coconut Oil
Not only does coconut oil give Wella Bars their delicious, creamy texture, it has also gained a reputation for being somewhat of a âwonder supplementâ over the yeras. Rich in monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, and antioxidants, coconut oil has been used for home remedies, natural skin care alternatives, and illness preventatives for centuries.
What some might not know is coconut oil contains many naturally occurring nutrients that greatly benefit human heart health function. The fats in coconut oil are 60-63% medium chain fatty acids, which provide our bodies with an efficient source of energy to âincrease calorie burning and promote weight loss.â Additionally, the monounsaturated fats in coconut oil aid our bodies in the production of bile and enzymes to help digest and remove unwanted fats, which in turn, helps to lower levels of bad (LDL) cholesterol.
Furthermore, coconut oilâs high concentration of antioxidants helps to decrease oxidative stress on the heart, and prevent the build up of excess plaque in our arteries. According to WebMD, adding small amounts of coconut oil to your diet can even âboost your HDL, or good cholesterol,â while simultaneously burning off fat calories that would otherwise be âconverted to body fat.â
The health benefits of coconut oil are many. In honor of February being Heart Healthy Month, think about giving your heart a little extra nourishment by slipping a tablespoon of coconut oil in your favorite smoothies, pan-seared dinners, or baked goods.
Beautiful!

FDA Proposes Plan Requiring Food Manufacturers To Label Refined Sugars
As of July 2015, the FDA has initiated preemptive plans to create new food labeling stipulations requiring food manufacturers to label the amount of added sugars present in their products.
The suggested requirements would obligate manufacturers to declare the percent Daily Value of supplemental refined sugars added to their products in the Nutrition Facts labeling section of productsâ packaging. The percent daily value indicates how much a nutrient in a serving of food contributes to oneâs daily diet based on a 2,000 calorie/day diet. According to the FDA, âadded sugars should not exceed 10% of your total calorie intake.â As of now, the average American gets 16% of their total calories from added sugars alone.
In order to provide Americans with the information they need to make more informed decisions on what they are putting in their bodies, the FDA is launching a plan to require companies to insert an âadded sugarsâ section on all their productâs nutritional information.
Since refined sugars provide no nutritional value to our bodies, they are often labeled as sources of âempty caloriesâ. Conversely, naturally occurring sugars present in milk, fruit, and honey, for example, provide our bodies with many crucially important vitamins, minerals, and nutrients our bodies need in order to function properly.
With the advent of recent health food initiatives, the FDA is making a concerted effort to make it easier for Americans to monitor the levels of unnatural, refined sugars theyâre putting into their bodies.
Since Wella Bar believes in âmaking food betterâ, each Wella Bar is sweetened to perfection with all natural, organic wildflower honey, and contains zero refined sugars. For a healthier outlook on food, help us spread the Wella standard of freshness, and sweeten life up with some natural sugar!

A Better World Starts With Better Food #foodcorps
Five years ago, a group of AmeriCorp leaders met at an Earth Day celebration in California, and formed one of modern dayâs most pivotal, groundbreaking organizations, Food Corps. An official member of the AmeriCorp national service network, Food Corps educates children on the importance of developing healthier, more ecologically sustainable eating habits.
The Portland, OR based non-profitâs mission is to âharness the power of a generation of young Americans to go on to be lifelong pioneers in the fields of food, health, education, and national service.â In an age where fast food and cheaply made, processed ingredients reign king, organizations like Food Corps are crucial.
According to the USDA, only 2% of children eat a balanced diet, while only 5% eat enough fruits and vegetables. As a result, children are becoming increasingly vulnerable to developing diet-related diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. With over 40% of children consuming half of their overall diets at school, FoodCorps aims to focus on changing the quality of food served at public school cafeterias, while simultaneously providing food and health education courses to all public school students.
To do so, FoodCorps has a 3 ingredient recipe: 1) Knowledge 2) Engagement 3) Access. Their first pillar of service, knowledge, focuses on educating students about the importance of maintaining a healthy diet, both for themselves and for the community. The hope is that if younger generations develop healthier eating habits, they will carry them on throughout their lives, and eventually foster the creation of an overall healthier, food conscious society. The second component, engagement, hones in on exposing students to how real food is grown, and ultimately transferred from farm to plate. This is where things get fun. As part of their food education system, FoodCorps representatives take public school students to local farms so students can see exactly where their food comes from, as well as providing hands-on gardening classes during normal school hours. The goal in doing so is to expose students to how real food is made, so that when they have the option to eat processed, nutritionally depleted foods, they wonât even think twice before choosing a healthier alternative.
Their third ingredient to success, and perhaps the most important, is making good food easily accessible to students. Starting by creating healthy, co-beneficial relationships between schools and local farms, FoodCorps has drastically changed the quality of food provided by over 500 public school cafeterias across 17 states nationwide. Instead of serving fried chicken tende rs and burgers at lunch, FoodCorps cafeterias serve grilled chicken, green beans, and mashed potatoes all sourced from local farms. According to co-founder, Curt Ellis, âevery kid should have access to good food, and if they canât get it at home, they deserve to see it in their school.â
It only makes sense to educate children on the importance of healthy nutrition at the same place they go to learn. While some may argue school should be restricted solely to academia, Debra Eschymer, co-founder of Food Corps, argues âwhat we teach kids in school about food is just as important as teaching them how to read and write.â It is no secret what you put into your body has a direct affect on how you function, feel, live, and learn, so why not educate students on the best ways to do that? Remember it is them who are going to be in the driverâs seat of the world in which we live in one day.
FoodCorps is the change the food industry and education system needs. With recent estimates claiming that diet-related diseases will cost over $1 trillion by the year 2030, it is pivotal that we change the way younger generations view the importance of healthy, sustainable eating. With FoodCorps systems in place at public schools across America, the dream of living in a nation where âchildren know what healthy food is, care about where it comes from, and have access to it every dayâ can finally become a reality.
