Medblr, what exactly is in chocolate that makes people crave it? Asking because I have never been a "chocoholic" before in my life--my opinion on chocolate has always been "hmm, sure, it's nice as a treat once in a while," but I've often gone whole weeks without thinking about it.
Yet suddenly, for a little over a week now, I have been craving it FIERCELY. Raiding our candy closet every five or six hours. Downing dark chocolate especially. For context, I am 37, I have had fibromyalgia since I was a child, I believe I'm going through early menopause (but have been for at least a few years, and this craving is new), and I am in the process of switching jobs (so under a lot of changes in routine and some mild stress, training my replacement, completing orientation for the new place, etc., even though I'm pleased I'm going to get to work there now--and again, I have had brief stressful periods for various reasons in life before, and this intense chocolate craving has never happened during those).
This morning my mother made chocolate cake with white icing, and I literally got up, fished the box of dark chocolate chips (which we normally just use for cooking purposes) out of the pantry, and SHOWERED my piece in it, because it "didn't taste chocolate enough" without them!! (And now I think I want another piece, with even MORE chocolate chips coating it!)
Seriously, what the heck is going on with me??! I know there are plenty of jokes about women craving chocolate, but I'm curious because this is so new and unusual for me, and I just wondered what nutrients I might be missing (which are apparently found in chocolate). Because this is definitely a specifically chocolate thing, not just needing sugar for energy in general (the thought of vanilla cake, non-chocolate ice cream, hard candy, fruit pies, etc. does absolutely nothing to excite me right now).
