Vex kisses him on the cheek, and her hair brushes against his jaw. It’s soft and lovely, and he wonders what it would feel like to run his fingers through it.

The thought catches him off guard. She’s beautiful, of course, and he’s not entirely immune to those charms. But she’s kissed him plenty of times, and this particular response has never been quite so present before.

Percy goes back to his workshop, full of wondering.

For months afterward, he tells himself it was the rush of success that had caused his reaction. He doesn’t allow himself to figure out otherwise.

The moment he thinks he’s out of danger, Vex hugs him. She smells like the woods and fresh air, with just a hint of sweat and leather. Her clothes still carry the cold from outside, but he doesn’t mind. 

He finds himself wondering what it would be like to wrap his arms around her waist and hold her. 

When he steps away, he’s glad Vex doesn’t notice that he’s shaking.

Percy can hardly keep his eyes open, and every inch of his body hurts. He groans as he shifts his arm into his lap.

“Percy?” He looks up to see Vex looking down at him, her face drawn tight with worry. “Are you all right?”

“Yes.”

“You’re hurt,” she replies.

“No more than anyone else.”

She sighs as she kneels in front of him, brushing her hair back from her face. The motion reveals a small cut on her cheek. “Be honest, Percy. How bad is it?”

“It’s not dire, I promise. Besides, I’m not the one bleeding,” Percy answers.

“It’s just a scratch. We both know you got the worst of it, darling. Do you need me to fetch Pike?” She looks so concerned, and it makes his chest hurt.

“No.”

“Percy?”

“Hmm?”

Vex blushes, and the sight is so endearing that he wants to burn it in his memory. Then, after a moment, she says, “It’s nothing.”

He wonders what it would be like to lean forward and kiss away her worry. Run his mouth slowly down her neck to the curve of her shoulder. Would she softly sigh his name or bury her hands in his hair?

It burns inside him with such intensity that he has to command himself not to act. So, he’s quite relieved when Vex is distracted by something else and leaves him alone. 

He buries his head in his hands with a sigh. His thoughts spin faster and faster, like a wheel with him at the center. 

What would it be like to walk behind her in the woods, watching the sunlight dancing in her hair? To make her laugh, hold her hand, and share her joy, pain, and hopes. Learn all the things that made her tick and show her what she meant to him every day. 

He’s perfectly aware that nothing should ever happen on this front. He’s too broken to offer her anything but jagged edges. Vex deserves more than his sad excuse for a heart.

But he can’t stop the damn wondering.

Seraphina hadn’t been ready for those words. But then Helena always had a way of CATCHING HER OFF-GUARD. No matter how well she thought she knew her. Jaw dropped and eyes full of something resembling LOVE. (DEFINITELY LOVE.) There was a GUILT in her heart and a TWISTING of her stomach. “I, umm...” Breaths permeated the atmosphere of the room. It was all HEAVY & SUFFOCATING. And Seraphina knew EXACTLY what she wanted to say. ‘Then let’s do it...’ But she knew it wasn’t QUITE THAT EASY. Delilah still didn’t even know the true extent of their, ahem -- FRIENDSHIP. Nor that Helena had spoken to SERAPHINA about Grace FIRST. Nor, nor, nor -- NOR -- the fact that Helena and Seraphina had planned to MOVE TO NEVADA and ADOPT GRACE. And then there was Seraphina’s own family to think about. Would it even be THAT EASY to just... DISAPPEAR? Was it really that EASY? Could it really be that EASY...?
