i forgot to tell you that i passed my welsh exam (yay!) BUT i got a lower mark than the other person in my class who did the sylfaen exam and i've been too embarrassed to ask anyone from other classes about their marks to know how mine compares generally so i'm finding it really hard not to let my competitive brain ruin this for me. it didn't help that the others shared their grades in the group chat straight away before i had time to process mine mentally :')
but like, the other sylfaen person in my class is unemployed and a super grammar enthusiast who loves memorising grammar rules and whatever and considers learning languages a major hobby of theirs, whereas i have two jobs and several chronic illnesses and have never memorised a rule in my life. AND the exam paper itself was unexpectedly inaccessible to me for format reasons that i hadn't known to request accommodations for so i was struggling on the day more than expected. so like. i was never going to do as well as they did. but my competitive brain really wanted to. and isn't satisfied by the fact that even though they got the set of speaking topics i wanted and i got the ones i was dreading, i was only a few marks lower on speaking, which is the most important unit, it's just the reading where i dropped more marks than anticipated, in part because i Could Not Read The Paper Properly Due To My Visual Disability
anyway how do i teach my brain that it's not a competition and also that even if it was, it's stupid to pick as your class rival somebody you could never actually match up to because they're the sort of person who gets 100% in language exams and you're the person who re-took AS level french and also parts of the GCSE. i need more people in my actual class to be my rivals if I want to have friendly competition that pushes me to work harder without making me just feel bad and discouraged. or i need to be less embarrassed to talk about it with people not in my class if I'm going to secretly compete with them. can't secretly compete with them if you don't know their marks!!
and ultimately at the end of the day the important thing is that i went to wales to take my exam and had a conversation at a bus stop in welsh and isn't that the whole fucking point and not whether i managed to "beat" my classmate's marks
