3.) The Welsummer is a breed of chicken hailing from the village (it's almost always a goddamn village when it comes to chickens, isn't it?) of Welsum in the eastern Netherlands. These birds are a wild ass combination of other breeds, with the backwater recipe consisting of Rhode Island Reds, Barnevelders, Leghorns, Cochins, and Wyandottes. It was only in 1922 that someone decided to take some initiative in determining a standard for this breed, seeing as they were finally beginning to show some uniformity despite being a melting pot of approximately 10,482 other breeds and alien space dust harvested from the Eridanus Supervoid.
Most representations of roosters in mainstream media are based on the Welsummer -- just look at them, is that not the classic rooster look? Hell, take a gander at the Kellogg's Cornflakes rooster, Cornelius. Then look at the Welsummer. Then look back to Cornelius. Cornelius is now revealed to be little more than a cheap imitation.
Welsummers are active, friendly, make for exceptional foragers, and come in three distinct varieties: the partridge, the silver duckwing, and the golden duckwing. The hens are known to go broody quite easily, and their eggs are brown and usually speckled with dark spots. In other words, they look pretty damn quaint. [x]
