MEET OTTO!!!

You may remember it from this post but I finally decided to do something with him.

He's now a passionate curse scholar working part time as one of Hell's many (many, MANY) secretaries, hence being the first creature Wendell meets after dying.

After somehow getting tangled in Wendell's shenanigans, it decides to partially stay by his side as a safety precaution. But he may have also had some direct experiences with curses himself....

((uh I can't think of a clean way to end this but let me know what you think of it so far!!))

I actually have some lore about them both!!!

While Mara (brown hair, yellow jacket) is apathetic about pretty much everything, one thing she has secretly wanted... is to become a witch.

Her family was supposedly connected to a long line of witches, specifically those using curses, but Mara herself was seen as too inferior to become one.

Hence why she's studying how to cure curses to spite them all.

Though despite it being the opposite of making curses and would appear to be a "wonderful thing" it's not. It is very much not. It's a tedious process for both the witch and the victim and is, in some cases, seen as WORSE than the curse itself.

So she pretends to be studying to get into medical school but inevitably drops the facade after realizing curing Wendell would probably get her to graduate easily.

(Mind you this was way before she actually felt bad for him but shh)

Speaking of Wendell...

Someone had cursed him as a baby with a typical "unlucky/dying in a set amount of time" curse.

But the first time he was meant to die (his first birthday) he managed to barely evade it so it stopped. And tried to kill him on each following birthday in increasingly dramatic ways.

Eventually after 20 or so years Death just gave up and made him choke to death. Which would've left the curse fulfilled... had Wendell not cursed himself again to keep living.

For the curse casters(?) themselves, it's seen as a crime to get rid of a curse by any means other than the original caster removing themselves, for instance, layering another curse on top of it to cancel it out.

So now Wendell has to deal with being undead WHILE still being cursed to die... with the addition of everyone else trying to kill him for violating the law, apparently.

Thinking about Wendell's Curse again and I may be starting to get a plot idea for it. Consider:

Wendell's was cursed as a baby to die at or before age 20-something through a series of increasingly catastrophic events

He does actually die on his birthday after choking. on free birthday frozen yogurt i guess

After a series of events he ends up making a deal with a powerful but despised figure in the afterlife to keep living as undead, hence his appearance in the series

Now everything/everyone is trying to kill him either because he violated the curse or because of his now undead state. Or both

Mara on the other hand is trying to keep him alive to see if she can cure his curse (originally to become a witch herself but eventually feeling bad about him having to die)

(For this reason people eventually want her gone too)
