So I started watching Dororo last night. Naturally I am now scrolling through tumblr liking every post with Dororo content. However I keep coming across people getting upset about the whole situation with Dororos gender. I myself am not a trans person and cannot begin to understand the frustration with the lack of rep in anime. However in this instance I THINK the whole ‘trap’ thing is understandable. The show takes place in a time that is VERY dangerous for women, constantly being r*ped and beaten with barely any rights. With Dororos line of “work” before -stealing items and then reselling them to make a profit- if people had even assumed Dororo was a girl the likely hood of them buying the items would have basically disappeared especially with male buyers. Because no one ever believes a women especially not during that age. Basically if Dororo would have acted more feminine half of the plot wouldn’t have made sense. Dororo most likely wouldn’t have been able to convince villagers Hyakkimaru was a monster slayer that could help them, especially because back then people would have 100% assumed Dororo and Hyakkimaru had some sort of relationship (brother/sister, lovers etc.) and if that was the case they would have found the female taking ‘lead’ suspicious or something. Idk but still, they should have properly explained the situation instead of pulling another fast one on the trans community, bastards.
