I love the fact that you can add a little comedy into such a tense situation, seeing Peri cramming herself under the coffee table made me smile.
I’m so glad that people are enjoying that, personally, I think it's important to strike a balance between the angst and softer moments.
Angst for the sake of angst can be a bit too much in a longer story where its an extended exchange. If we just are repeatedly beat over the head and expected to ‘cry’ it starts to lose its substance. It, for a lack of a better word here, milks you dry emotionally. Ever watched a series or a story that you loved at first but by the fourth episode, you just feel so... done? Nothing is hitting you, there is no impact.
I, from the start, didn’t want people to think this story was going to be strictly angst. It does have its lighter moments, and that comes from my narrative direction but also the show itself. Steven Universe is a really bright story with compelling sweet characters, I don't want that to be lost in the weight of the story I’m telling. Peridot from the beginning of her apperances was a bit of an enigma to me. She was so logical and technical but such a... weirdo. I remember being so jarred by the fact she ran around on all fours after the CG’s found her reformed.
She is the clodest of the clods and I don’t want us to forget that endearing quality to her character.
