Get into the ooky spooky spirit! HALLOWEEN IS HERE and the WEREWOLVES are OUT!
Introducing WereMan™️
He's a regular man, but on the full moon, he transforms into a slightly different man.
The old man appeared at every full moon. He was always naked, tufts of grey hair sticking out of his chest, stumbling around as though he were unsure of how to use his legs. Carla and Daniel stared through their window huddled together as he made his way into their yard, his eyes cast to the moon, a guttural moan coming out of his throat. They never approached him, but always left a plate of food on the deck, an offering of sorts. Perhaps that was why he always returned to them.
Carla and Daniel lived on the fringes of town, one of the last houses before it turned into wilderness. They were used to wild animals. Hares stole vegetables from their garden, and wolves lurked on the edge of their property. But nothing frightened them like the old man.
One night, Carla thought she would try to speak to him. She somehow got Daniel to accompany her outside with the plate of food. The moon was full and round above them. They waited patiently on the deck until he stumbled out of the forest, teeth bared, his bare feet dragging twigs and grass behind him.
“Hello,” Carla said, her voice barely a whisper. Daniel merely squeaked. The man opened his mouth, but the sounds that came out were unintelligible. Perhaps he didn’t know their language.
“Here’s your food,” Carla continued. She lay the plate down on the ground when he didn’t answer, and took a step back. Daniel clung to her hand so tight she thought it would break.
The man hung back at first, observing the two children, and, bit by bit, he edged his way towards them. He sniffed at the food and then, completely ignoring the fork and knife Carla had laid out for him, he stuck his face in the plate, devouring the entire thing in a matter of minutes. Pieces of meat hung from his lips, and Carla pretended not to be afraid. From close up, she could see the way the moon reflected in his washed-out blue eyes, and the clumps of dirt that hung from his hair. She took a step closer, hand extended, but the man snarled at her, and she jumped back. He lifted his upper lip to show his yellow teeth and then stumbled back into the forest.
Carla managed to convince Daniel to wait for him again the next evening, but a sliver was missing from the moon, and the man didn’t appear. A wolf hung by the edge of their property, almost as though he were expecting a treat, but they saw many wolves around those parts. It was probably a coincidence.
