Was just reminded that Egbert is from Washington and therefore has never had a proper bagel. Dave probably hasn't either, but idk I've never been to Texas. Rose though? Rose knows the truth about bagels. She know the texture and density they're supposed to have. Jade ironically has a better chance of having something resemble an actual bagel by virtue of if she wants any kind of bread product that isn't horrifically stale she's gonna have to make it herself, and she'd presumably look it up, but Rose is the only one that knows. Not just of the Beta kids, but all of them. I don't care if Jane is the heiress to a baking empire; she's not kettling those babies; she's making rolls with holes. Not even Roxy knows what a real bagel is like. She lives in a post apocalyptic future barren of bagels.

Did Rose try to alchemize bagels on the meteor? Did she create circle shaped bread which Dave thought was a success? Did he hold it up to the trolls and tell them that that's what a bagel is? Did she hear pride in his voice as he said that his sister made bagels? How desperately did she want to make that an accurate statement? Did she try to make them from scratch? How much of destroyed Earth's internet did they have access to? Could she find a recipe? What's the captchalogue code for yeast? How about barley malt? Had she ever baked anything before? Had she ever cooked anything more complicated than an egg before? How temperature controlled were the rooms on the meteor? were any of them the right temp for proofing the dough? Did the meteor have an oven? Did she build one out of bricks? How well would she have regulated the heat? Would she have built the oven in the "outdoor" sections of the meteor because of the fire hazard? Did she pull out a dense lopsided hockey puck from the oven and look out at the expanse of the furthest ring and have it really hit her that the Earth was gone? Did she grieve the Earth and all the little foods and techniques and practices? All the information passed down from teacher to student, parent to child? Did she try desperately to remember anything and everything her mother taught her?

Did she pick up the round bread that Dave, and now the trolls, called a bagel and realize that even if she could show someone the general shape of the world she lived in, it's gone, and even if the names remain, they can never know the substance of it.
