A/n: a pretty lazy ending TBH but whatever
When you first saw Vaelrik, you were enamoured.
You weren’t sure about love-at-first-sight, but you certainly couldn’t take your eyes off him.
Standing shirtless amongst the crowded make-shift market, he clutched a brown paper bag filled with groceries tight to his chest. His dark tousled hair, sun-kissed skin, homemade necklace, gave him a free-spirited look. He continues to munch absent minded into the apple that’s clutched in his large scarred hand. He turns to return your gaze, looking down upon your form with those dazzling green-eyes, a hint of wonder at your blatant stare, more so bemused with your obvious entrancement.
For such a large and imposing man, he sure did have his boyish charm.
That first encounter only lead to many more impromptu meetings.
“We really have to stop meeting like this!” He would say with a large grin slapped across his face. If you didn’t know any better, you would think he seeks you out. But never paying too much mind to the oddity of your accidental frequent meetings, you were always more than happy to be brought back to him one way or another.
Continued shared moments lead you to form a special bond. The type of relationship that blooms from time spent together.
Your friendship began to develop into a song and dance of ‘will they, won’t they?’ When Vaelrick would flirt relentlessly, enjoying how you would seemingly fall apart so obviously at every word he spoke. Yet despite your flustered nature, you did nothing but drink up his word-play, enjoying the sanctity of his compliments. Despite your obvious affections for him, you remain in denial about your romantic feelings.
“Oh you’re so in love with me!”
“N-no I’m not!”
Oh -yes you were and he thrived on it. Knowing that one day you’ll be his, if he’s patient enough.
And by all means, he was right.
One fateful night, you both stared up at the waxing gibbous moon, the stars were out in all its glory shinning down upon the two of you after a heated passionate moment shared together, where you held eachother and he moaned your name as you both forever crossed the line of your friendship. Now becoming unofficial lovers.
The winds would breeze across your forms, making you want to cuddle up closer, and you do, holding Vaelrick impossibly close, his fingers grazing your arm.
“I want to stay but I have work tomorrow… busiest night in the month.” You would say.
“Me too… I have a family thing… but I’ll see you real soon love.” He would say. “… Want to go again?” He’d ask, eliciting a giggle from you as he yanks you into a new position, all whilst you nod eagerly.
Why couldn’t you go back to that time?
You continue to stare at the werewolf half-transformed before you. The full moon edging into the sky to begin transforming all creatures bound by a curse to its presence; which just so happens to include Vaelrick.
He stares back at you with wide broken eyes to see the woman he loves wielding the slayers reaper blade. Undoubtably, meant for his neck.
Your broken mind reeling helplessly at the sight. Never once had you anticipated your presence to bring such a defeated look to Vaelricks face.
“I-I-it’s okay!” You would say, more so for yourself than him. “I’ll just take you to a witch and-“
“Y/n-“
“And w-we will just show her where you were bitten.”
“Y/n-“
“How could I not have noticed a bite mark on you!” You say slapping your forehead. “That was stupid of me! I could’ve helped you sooner. A witch can fix this.”
“Y/n!” Vaelrick angry yell snaps you from your panicked ramblings.
“A witch can’t fix this.” He says with a defeated tone that doesn’t match your Valerick. “I’m a hybrid.”
“No.” You mumble in absolute shock.
“I’m born this way love.”
“No!” Your drawn out denial and the slamming news about your lover has your knees slowly giving out below you.
Clutching tighter at your reapers blade.
The action causes Vaelrick to flinch, helplessly watching you fall apart mere steps away. Caught between his want to comfort you, and his instincts screaming at him to run.
“I’m a hybrid love.” He mutters helplessly, forcing you to hear the poisonous words again. “I was blessed at birth, not cursed at a bite.” He turns his back to you, slowly crawling to the floor until he takes off at high speed, leaving you alone to pick up the pieces.
You only took your eyes off for just a moment.
One minute you’re looking at a flower stall, the next you were swallowing the panicked breaths bubbling to the surface when you realised your son is no longer by your side.
Your head whips side to side, your eyes scanning the crowd for a familiar mop of hair. You were mere seconds from screaming your son‘s name over the crowd, the rising panic from your chest squashing all semblance of any social anxiety.
But it was right then, you catch a glimpse of your adorable son talking with a large man crouching before him.
“Lost your mum have you?” The familiar deep voice punches you in the gut. Just your luck to run into your past lover in the same place you first met him. You watch your son nod wordlessly, his wobbly chin betraying the brave face he’s trying to hold. “What’s your name?”
“Fenwik, Mh 2.” Your son answers, holding four fingers up.
“Fenrik? Sounds like my name! I’m Vaelrick!” He says enthusiastically, making your son muster a small smile. “Come on, let’s go find you mum!” He says enthusiastically, making your heart twist painfully.
Just as the man stood, grabbing a hold on your son’s small hand, your eyes lock onto Vaelrik. His bright and lighthearted smile gets drained from his face.
“MUMMY!” Fenrik screams, pulling away from Vaelrik and launching himself into you, throwing his arms around you, clutching you tightly.
You can feel his tiny heart fluttering against your leg. You pull your son up in your arms and hold him close to your chest, patting his back soothing away his nerves just as much as it soothed your own. “Let’s go home baby boy.” You whisper, turning your back on the man you loved.
It was surprisingly just as painful as when he ran away from you all those years ago.
“H-hang on a minute.” Vaelrik says, grabbing your upper arm. “Is this your mum Fenrik?” Vaelrik asks with a hint of desperation.
“My mummy.” Fenrik nods agreeably.
“Who’s your dad?” Vaelrik asks, his wide eyes looking broken like all those years past.
“Dad?” Fenriks small head tilts to the side.
Vaelrik looks towards the floor in painful horror, unsure what to do, or what to say, not understanding and being overloaded with too much information all at the same time. Does this mean?
“Fenrik,” You say, tucking a lock of hair behind his small ear. “This is your daddy.” Vaelrik head snaps up at you. It’s only now that Vaelrik is standing so close to you, that he’s now realised how tired you look, a miserable smile pressed to your lips.
“My daddy?” Fenrik asks, seemingly unsure on what the word even means, but all the same he just nods and accepts this. His little legs kick beneath you. His silent way of telling you to put in down.
You gently lower him to the floor and watch him bolt towards the candy stall, surely grabbing free samples from the old lady running the booth.
“That’s-“
“Our son.” You say dryly, struggling to look at Vaelrik who, despite your initial meeting- looks great. His skin remains tanned with a youthful glow, his shiny green eyes looking bright and fresh. Where yours feel bloodshot from exhaustion.
“Ours would imply I was there to begin with.” He says, looking at you from the side. “How could you not tell me?”
“How could I?” You retort back with a daring venomous tone. “You took off like a lightening bolt.”
“As if you couldn’t use those slayers skills of yours to find me.” He reply’s back drying but you only shrug your shoulders.
“Why would I look for someone I love who’d think I’d slay them?” You say back with that steady facade you use to have. “It’s just a job for fucks sake - I would have never chosen my job over-“
Before you could speak another word, Vaelrick grabs your cheeks harshly and pulls you into the most desperate kiss you’ve ever had.
He pulls away as you look up at him breathless.
“I’m sorry… I was stupid… can we go home?”
