thinking face - what is the hardest part of writing fic?

-even though i've been writing fanfic since i was 12 and trying to write some sort of fiction since i was like...in kindergarten, i still feel like a very new writer who is still....learning how to do everything. so the hardest part of writing fic is the actual writing (all of it). but to actually answer your question, getting the voices right. "he would not fucking say that" is such a real reason people click out of fanfic (as is their right). so for me? getting voices right. and not always going with whatever i think is just the funniest thing that could happen in the moment. or the cutest.

-if you are a goodcollins shipper, "Sculpin" is basically required reading. it's cute and hot and a little sad.

Li is incredible at romance and specifically romance with body issues. every time Li makes that the center of their work i'm sort of tearing myself a part and putting myself back together in the time it takes me to read the whole thing.

honestly just have never seen watersports done quite like this and it was such a treat because the hurt/comfort was so palpably written. ive been thinking about it a lot since i first read it.

thought bubble - what is a headcanon you have about your own work?

sorry im such a pedantic bastard but writers cannot have headcanons about their own work because writers are in the driver's seat. writers just have choices they make or ideas that they hold onto while they are writing. fans/readers/viewers have headcanons.

which is what i would say if i was a pedantic bastard. in the "hair pulling" chapter of corpora cavernosa, collins and blanky are both firefighters. they're still coworkers when they're fucking like that.

🍾 - A character the fandom has helped you appreciate more

edward little was a character who did nott click for me at first!! i got the appeal but he just didn't take up much brainspace but i ended up doing a bunch of research on historical little because i was so confused that we seemed to know so little about him, and ended up writing ALBATROSS in the span of like two days because he made me so insane

🔗 - Which WIP are you most likely to finish next?

the king's justice!! it's a turn fic and an au of 1x08 that is. very self-indulgent (bad things happen to ben tallmadge) and currently sitting pretty at 2.7k words. i wrote most of it in a physical notebook and then had to spend a ridiculous amount of time trying to read my own handwriting

🏆 - Share a fic you are especially proud of

some of my other fics feel like a more obvious choice for this one, but quite possibly my favorite character study i've ever written is no wound is as sharp as the will of god. i wrote it very stream-of-consciousness and pretty quickly, so it's a bit unpolished, but i think the emotion in it feels very real and it gets across a lot of how i view jirving and why i loke him so much/find him so interesting. character of all time no competition

💖 What do you like most about your own writing?

Imagery! I can’t see images in my head when I think of things, so it makes it really easy for me to use words to describe it.

🤔 What is the hardest part of writing fic?

Predicting if people will actually read it or not. While I do write mostly for myself, I am an attention whore and feel like a failure if I don’t get comments (I’m working on it).

🍰 Name one of your fave comfort fics (doesn’t have to be your all time fave).

Oh man, this is gonna make me seem like a dick, but my own fics are honestly my fave comfort fics. Despite writing exclusively fanfic, I put a lot of myself, my life, and also elements of my friends into it, so certain fics of mine just feel like a hug.

Some Other Town used to be my go-to comfort fic I wrote, but with everything that happened since then with Farter Shart it’s been ruined for me. Wish I had the gift of prophecy and could have spared myself. Now it’s the 3rd Haunting installment, purely because I wrote it over a period of huge change in my life.

💭 What is a headcanon you have about your own work?

Every fic I’ve written I have a plethora of headcanons that don’t make it in. I lost count of them with the Haunting universe, especially since I wrote those fics over a span of almost 5 years.

A major headcanon I have for the (yet unpublished) Terror reincarnation fic though is that: every character is the bear (I swear that isn’t a spoiler) at one point or another.

😈 Is there anything you enjoy doing that you think your readers hate?

open-ended unhappy endings. i really want to write comfort/hopeful endings, but that's not really where my mind goes a lot of the time. i think personally darkfic/hurt no comfort makes me feel seen in a way, and sometimes hurt/comfort can feel a little... disingenuous i guess? just because you receive comfort doesn't mean everything is better, which is why a lot of my hurt/comfort is still very bittersweet.

🤔 What is the hardest part of writing fic?

keeping the momentum for me. i write a lot very quickly, but if i lose motivation it can be VERY hard for me to get it back. i also think connecting disparate scenes if i have clear ideas of only some of what i want to write. also planning fics!! planning ahead is VERY hard for me because i will just skip around to the parts i want to write.

probably Under My Wings You Will Find Refuge by Fiver. it just makes me so happy, and i've been following it since i was thirteen (which is like ten years atp???) i also go back a lot to How Arthur Got His Groove Back by thegeminisage. it's just such good fun ^_^

4 ⧽. is there an au or trope that you haven't written before, but would want to try?

i really want to write a daemon au, but for some reason i've found it super difficult!! it was my original plan for the terror big bang and well. i changed my plans because writing it was like pulling teeth. i know what everyone's daemon would be, and i have thoughts on merging terror canon with his dark materials canon, but for some reason i have not been able to make it work!!!

7 ⧽. is there a fic you wish you received feedback on, but didn't get any/much? this ask game is asking someone else to then give feedback on said fic, pretty pretty please!!!

hmm probably ALBATROSS because i think the first person pov puts people off, the still heart beating where it lies because it was my very first attempt at omegaverse and i'm super proud of the worldbuilding i did for it & the amt of writing i did, or the ragged ends of your summer dress which is frankly deeply personal and my favorite piece of romantic writing i've ever done & a love letter to being trans and in love that i am tearing up even thinking about.

10 ⧽. what genre is generally the easiest or most enjoyable for you to write? which is the hardest?

i find writing angst/whump/hurt no comfort the easiest to write, since that's what i've been writing since i started with fic. in the past my answer for hardest genre to write would be romance/fluff, but that has been slowly getting easier for me the more i've done. now, i think the hardest genre for me to write is hurt/comfort, but specifically the comfort part, since i'm really good at making things super bad & bleak and not so good at getting out of that hole.
